Better Call Saul

Bryan Cranston Was Asked to Direct a Better Call Saul Episode, But It Never Happened

We were robbed of what could have been the greatest episode of Better Call Saul.

Breaking Bad ended up being so well-crafted for many reasons, and Bryan Cranston ’s crazy commitment is definitely a big one. Not only did he nail the role of Walter White, but he also showed off his skills behind the camera as a director for a few episodes.

Imagine the excitement when Cranston revealed in an interview that he was asked to direct an episode of Better Call Saul, the spin-off series that ended up being as praised as the original show.

In a fragment of a 2017 interview posted by TV Guide, Cranston said: “I have been asked to direct an episode of Better Call Saul every year that they’ve been on the air and it just so happens what happened with my schedule it just hasn’t worked out.”

He added, “But I’m a huge fan of the show and of Vince Gilligan and Peter Gould, of course. And I would love to direct an episode, and I’d also be in one if Vince Gilligan thought that it was a good idea to do that”

Unfortunately, from that 2017 interview until the very end of Better Call Saul, no episode directed by Bryan Cranston saw the light of day, and it’s a bummer. However, Cranston at least reprised his role as Walter White in the final season of Better Call Saul, and it was priceless.

Before he became Walter White, Bryan Cranston had a long career in acting, including roles in series like Malcolm in the Middle. But he also directed several episodes of that show. Yes, Cranston has been behind the camera for quite some time.

His directorial debut actually came in 1999 with an episode of Malcolm in the Middle, and he has since directed episodes of Breaking Bad, Modern Family, and The Office.

It’s a shame he never got to direct a single episode of Better Call Saul. Just seeing his name in the opening credits would’ve been totally mind-blowing for fans.

If you are up to rewatching the acclaimed gem, Breaking Bad is available to stream on Netflix.
