Cobra Kai Season 6 Gets Exciting Update From Blue Beetle’s Xolo Maridueña
Blue Beetle star Xolo Maridueña reveals a new production update about Netflix’s highly-anticipated sixth and final season of Cobra Kai.
Cobra Kai breakout Xolo Maridueña finally shared an update regarding the current status of the upcoming sixth and final season of Karate Kid spinoff series.
During a recent interview with Collider, Maridueña confirmed that Cobra Kai Season 6 will soon resume its production, following the end of the SAG-AFTRA strike last Nov. 9. “I do have a date, and it’s right around the corner, so I’m excited to get back in the ‘gi,” he revealed. “We already did the first episode right before the writers’ strike, so we’re gonna hit the ground running, I know it.” Maridueña has been playing the role of Miguel Diaz since the show’s first season, where he was introduced as the first member of Johnny Lawrence’s revived Cobra Kai dojo.
In addition, the Blue Beetle actor reflected on his experience working on Cobra Kai, which he started when he was 16 years old. He also expressed how grateful he is for all the things he learned through the series. “Cobra Kai taught me so much of what I love and know about acting,” Maridueña continued. “On camera and off-camera, the people, the relationships that I made on that show, are ones that I’ll remember for my whole life. So, I’m forever grateful for it, and I know it’s damn not gonna be the last time that we meet.”
Cobra Kai is co-created by Josh Heald, Jon Hurwitz, and Hayden Schlossberg, who initially developed the martial arts dramedy as a YouTube Premium original series. In 2020, the series officially moved to Netflix for its third season, where it started garnering global attention. After receiving positive reviews from critics and audiences alike, it was able to score three more season renewals, including its upcoming sixth and final season. Season 5 ended with Daniel LaRusso, Johnny Lawrence and Chozen Toguchi unexpectedly teaming up with each other to take down Terry Silver’s Cobra Kai dojo. Further details about Season 6’s plot and characters are still being kept under wraps.
Last Sept. 2022, Sony Pictures announced the development of its next Karate Kid movie. Despite initially denying his involvement in the project, it has been officially confirmed that franchise vet Ralph Macchio will be reprising his iconic role as Daniel LaRusso in the untitled movie. He will be joined by action legend Jackie Chan, who is returning to reprise Han from the 2010 Jaden Smith-led reboot. In a new video for the project, Macchio and Chan revealed that there will be a global casting call for a Chinese actor to become the next titular character of the franchise.
The untitled Karate Kid movie will be directed by Jonathan Entwistle, who’s best known for his work on Netflix teen shows like I’m Not Okay with This, and The End of the F***ing World. Peter Rabbit scribe Rob Lieber has also signed on to pen the movie, which is set to take place on the East Coast. According to the synopsis, the storyline will reportedly center around “a teen from China [who] finds strength and direction via [martial] arts and a tough but wise mentor.”
