Cobra Kai Spinoff Chances Gets Optimistic Update From Creator Ahead Of Season 6 Part 3’s Release

Cobra Kai co-creator Jon Hurwitz has an exceptional update about a potential spin-off. The show, which was a sequel to the Karate Kid franchise, is coming to an end with the upcoming Cobra Kai season 6, part 3. A sequel movie, Karate Kid: Legends, is already in development. It will follow Daniel LaRusso (Ralph Macchio) working with Mr. Han (Jackie Chan) to help train the young Li Fong (Ben Wang), and it will be released on May 30, 2025. While it does mean a future for many characters from the franchise, some remain in limbo.

In a post on his official Twitter/X account, Hurwitz announced that he is “actively working” on a potential spin-off. While he did not officially state that there would be a follow-up show, he did emphasize that he has high hopes for the project. Check out his post below:

The tweet came in response to a viewer who asked if a spin-off would follow existing characters from this series. Hurwitz’s reply indicates that it is a definite possibility.

What Hurwitz’s Comments Mean For Cobra Kai

Hurwitz has previously and frequently emphasized his interest in a spin-off. Cobra Kai has an expansive cast of characters, giving him ample room to explore a wide variety of stories. There have been public discussions about spin-offs relating to Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka), the younger cast members, and even a Mr. Miyagi prequel series. With so many different options, it is impossible to know exactly which spin-offs are currently in development, save Karate Kids: Legends. There could even be multiple shows in development at once, though it would risk over-saturating the market.

With so much in the pipeline, Netflix may not want to spoil the movie or the show’s finale by revealing which characters will remain integrated into the community.

The exact nature of the spin-off is unlikely to be known until at least late May. Cobra Kai is coming to an end with its final batch of episodes in February 2025, and the sequel movie will be released on May 30 of that same year. With so much in the pipeline, Netflix may not want to spoil the movie or the show’s finale by revealing which characters will remain integrated into the community. Some of the villains may not even survive the final episodes. After all, Cobra Kai season 6 part 2’s shocking ending may have killed a crucial character already.

Our Take On The Cobra Kai Spin-Off

It should come as no surprise that there is at least one spin-off show in development. The show has been an immense success for Netflix, earning a 93% Tomatometer score and a 90% audience-led Popcornmeter score on Rotten Tomatoes. After seeing its critical and financial success, as it became the most-watched show on Netflix in 2020, it would be a mistake to let Cobra Kai go. With the show ending, the platform needed a swift follow-up. Cobra Kai’s spin-off was inevitable, but it is still good to see that Hurwitz is involved and actively leading the project.
