Doctor Who boss Russell T Davies teases Yasmin Finney’s future on show
“See you soon.”
Doctor Who producer Russell T Davies has seemingly dropped hints about Yasmin Finney’s future on the show.
The Heartstopper actress will be appearing in the 60th-anniversary specials alongside David Tennant and Catherine Tate, playing the mysterious character Rose.
While Finney is expected to appear throughout the three anniversary specials, there had been no official word about her joining series 14 alongside new Doctor, Ncuti Gatwa, and new companion, Millie Gibson. Until now?
In Davies’s monthly column for Doctor Who Magazine (via Radio Times), Davies appears to mention in passing that Millie Gibson and Yasmin Finney were on set at the same time the show was filming series 14.
“I stand at the back of the studio. Millie catches my eye. We wave across the distance, but I don’t step in. They’re busy. Clock ticking. But around me, people are drawing in,” the writer recalled.
“Crew, office staff, actors. It’s been a week of goodbyes – Yasmin Finney wrapped a few days ago, big hugs, see you soon – but it all comes down to this. The last scene.”
The BBC has declined to comment on whether Finney will return for series 14.
Finney has promised that there will be some intense scenes for her character Rose throughout the anniversary episodes.
“It was a complete mind-blowing experience when I got cast. I can’t really relive it because I was so in the moment,” she recently told Elle.
“At first, [the show] had a code name, and then I found out what the show was and I was like, ‘Oh my God, I’ve just been cast in Doctor Who.’ It’s a trans character as well, and it’s such a blessing as well to be able to play such a monumental character like Rose.”
The Heartstopper actress is part of an impressive cast for the Doctor Who anniversary that also includes returning cast members Jacqueline King and Karl Collins as well as Neil Patrick Harris as a new villain. The late Bernard Cribbins also reprised his role as Wilf Mott shortly before his death.
