Bathurst was on the BBC show on Friday, 14 March talking about his role in Casualty, when host Lauren Laverne mentioned that many viewers know him for Downton.

“I think there is one moment from your time in the TV show that fans haven’t forgiven you for,” she said, referring to the episode where Strallan left Lady Edith (Laura Carmichael) at the altar.

“Well my departure from the show,” he said. “I left Lady Edith at the altar and was roundly booed. Not only on set!”

Laverne asked Bathurst if people still come up to him in the street to mention it and he replied: “Yes.

“I had a vicar, he came up to me in the street and told me ‘How could you have done that?’ and all that, so yes!”

He went on: “As far as I am concerned, my character behaved perfectly honourably but that wasn’t agreed with by most people!”
