Good Omens Season 3 Renewal Chances Get Most Positive Update Yet, Neil Gaiman Responds
Although Good Omens season 3 has not yet been renewed, the latest update from Prime Video is a step in the right direction for the Gaiman adaptation.
The possibility of Good Omens season 3 has gotten a very positive update. The Prime Video series, which stars Michael Sheen and David Tennant, is based on the Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett novel of the same name, which followed the angel Aziraphale and the demon Crowley reluctantly teaming up to stop the apocalypse and prolong their time on Earth. Although it has been nearly three months since the premiere of Good Omens season 2, it has not yet been announced if the show has been renewed for season 3.
Per Deadline, there has been a positive development in the progress toward Good Omens season 3. Although it has not yet been officially renewed, the cast options have been picked up for Sheen and Tennant, meaning that they would appear in the new season should it be greenlit. However, co-showrunner Douglas Mackinnon, who worked on the first two seasons, would not be returning. On his personal Tumblr, Gaiman wrote this in response to the news:
Every day it’s getting closer. We aren’t quite there yet. But Amazon has definitely been doing things that make a third season more likely.
Why Good Omens Season 3 Is Taking So Long
While it has taken some time for Prime Video to decide whether they should renew Good Omens, the show has already set a precedent for delayed renewals. In fact, Good Omens season 2 was only renewed two years after the 2019 premiere of season 1. One reason for this is the fact that the show was originally intended to be a miniseries, as it adapted the entire narrative of the book, which has no sequels.
Also contributing to the delays in renewing Good Omens season 3 are the 2023 Hollywood strikes, as guild members fight for fair pay. While the writers strike ended after 148 days, the actors strike is still ongoing, preventing Screen Actors Guild members from performing in or promoting struck projects. This means that, even if writers developed the season and completed the scripts, it wouldn’t be able to go into production until the actors’ new contract with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers is negotiated.
However, it is a very good sign that the options for the Good Omens cast have been picked up, even during the strike. This means that Prime Video hasn’t eliminated the possibility of the show carrying on into a new season, even though it wouldn’t be able to go into production right away. While this doesn’t mean a renewal is guaranteed, this is the first step toward making sure season 3 can happen.
