‘Grey’s Anatomy’ star Katherine Heigl shares emotional tribute to Eric Dane

WASHINGTON — “Grey’s Anatomy” actress Katherine Heigl shared an emotional tribute to her late co-star Eric Dane on Sunday.
Dane died on Thursday from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, known as ALS or Lou Gehrig’s disease. He was 53. The news of Dane’s death came less than a year after he made his ALS diagnosis public.
Heigl, who starred in the medical drama series alongside Dane, posted a throwback photo of the two on Instagram, accompanied by a touching caption.
“I debated this post for days. I have never been comfortable grieving publicly. I share my tears, my stories and my memories with those I’m closest to and more times than not I share them only with the heavens alone,” Heigl said. “But that silence can often look like a lack of care which I could not abide here.”
“Rebecca, Billie, Georgia… There is so little, if in fact anything, one can say about a tragic loss like yours. All the “I’m sorries” and “ my prayers are with you” ring a bit hollow in the midst of so much pain and grief. So I will say the only thing that has ever brought me peace when I’ve lost someone I love,” she added. “It is Robert Frost’s poem “ Nothing Gold Can Stay” of which I have tattooed on my body in my parent’s handwriting so I will never forget that the moment of gold was worth it. ‘Natures first green is gold, her hardest hue to hold. Her early leaf’s a flower; but only so an hour. Then leaf subsides to leaf. So Eden sank to grief, so Dawn goes down to day. Nothing gold can stay.'”
“I will never forget Eric’s gold and I will forever be grateful I got to bask in it for even a brief moment in time. Thank you for sharing him with us,” she added before saying. “God Speed my old friend…here’s to your next great adventure.”
Heigl’s post is the latest tribute from the “Grey Anatomy” alums who have remembered Dane this week.

In an interview this week, Patrick Dempsey also spoke about Dane’s death.
“I feel really sorry ofr his children,” Dempsey said. “I was corresponding with him, we were texting and so I spoke to him about a week ago, and some friends of our went in to see him and he was really starting to lose his ability to speak.”
Kate Walsh, who played Addison on “Grey’s Anatomy,” also shared a post on Friday, sending love to his wife Rebecca Gayheart and his two daughters. She also remembered starring alongside the actor.
“I’m at a loss for words to try to express the sadness around Eric’s passing,” she said on Facebook Friday. “I literally remember my very first scene with Eric…an elevator scene at Seattle Greys So, so long ago. I believe it was his first scene on the show too and he was nervous. He was so handsome and I thought ‘but can this guy act?’ and of course he could, and did, and the rest is history.”
“One of the things I loved about Eric was his sensitivity and vulnerability, (and intelligence, of course) but he had the gravitas & old soul the that made his work magnetic and all made him a great friend off set. In those early days of Grey’s, as with most network tv shows, we spent more time with each other than with anyone else and so we became a family of sorts and Eric was such a source of support and love,” she added. “ALS is an awful disease & too many people have lost loved ones to it. I know it was Eric’s mission to help find a cure. I would encourage you to look into @targetals in his memory. ”
Rebecca Gayheart thanks everyone for ‘outpouring love and support’ following husband’s death
Dane’s wife, Rebecca Gayheart, shared on Sunday that she was “blown away by the outpouring love and support” that has followed since the 53-year-old actor’s death.
“I am so blown away by the outpouring of love and support from our community. There aren’t words to express our own gratitude,” she said on Instagram stories on Sunday. “You are truly holding us during this difficult time.”
