‘I’ll Never Forget It’: Millie Gibson Reveals Ncuti Gatwa’s Reaction to Shocking Doctor Who Twist

Doctor Who is no stranger to shocking twists, but the most recent episode “Lucky Day” had one no-one saw coming. Conrad Clark (Jonah Hauer-King) seemed like such a nice guy, but he was actually one of the most revolting villains the show has ever known.

It turns out that current Doctor Ncuti Gatwa was just as shocked about the Conrad twist as the audience was. His season one co-star Millie Gibson, who made her triumphant return to the show as Ruby Sunday in “Lucky Day,” revealed all in an interview with Screen Rant. Like so many of the people watching, Gatwa thought that Conrad was just too nice to be a bad guy.

“Even when we did the read-through, I remember Ncuti being like, ‘I don’t think I’ve had a chance to read this episode…’” Gibson remembered,. “We were just turning the pages until I heard Ncuti’s reaction. I’ll never forget it. The gasp he gasped was just insane. I was obsessed! I hope everyone else has the reaction that Ncuti had.” They did – and that’s a testament to Hauer-King’s skill as an actor, skill that Gibson is eager to talk about.

Gibson said, “That switch was great! Jonah plays Conrad so goofy that you never see it coming. ‘He’s Prince Eric! He will never betray us.’ That’s what you think. Jonah just plays it beautifully. That speech where he is like, ‘I’ve had to listen to your tedious piano solos!’ Ugh, it’s perfect.”

Conrad was last seen about to break out of prison with the help of Mrs Flood (Anita Dobson), a mysterious woman who can break the fourth wall and appears to be following the Doctor throughout time and space. It seems likely that both characters will feature in Doctor Who further down the line, especially considering that Conrad is now set up as an enemy of UNIT specifically.

Gibson is definitely going to be in more Doctor Who episodes. “[Ruby] comes back in 7 and 8, so that was really exciting. I don’t think I can say too much more than that. However, I was very honored to come back for the finale,” the actress told Screen Rant. She also teased that she knows the true identity of Mrs Flood – but she’s not telling.

“I do know!” Gibson excitedly told the site, “My theories prior were completely off, if that tells the fans anything. However, Doctor Who fans are so much cleverer than I am, so they probably will hit it right on the head. I was like, ‘Oh!’” There are multiple theories about Mrs Flood – some think she might be another surviving Time Lord, while others think she might be a god like the Toymaker and Sutekh. “Anita Dobson is incredible, for one, so whoever she turns out to be would be iconic,” Gibson teased.
