I’m Even More Excited for Rings of Power Season 3 Now That This Aragorn Connection Is Officially Confirmed

Despite a few bumps along the way, The Rings of Power has transformed into a surprisingly great legacy television series. Its second season featured a marked spike in quality as it depicted the events leading up to the Elves’ war with Sauron. With a five-year time jump, Season 3 prepares to jump immediately into the action and finally has a chance to fully win over any fans who might still be adamantly opposed to its very existence. Now, the latest set video from The Rings of Power has me even more excited for the upcoming season, thanks to one critical connection to the original Lord of the Rings trilogy.

Fans of the franchise will immediately recognize Narsil as a crucial part of Middle-earth lore. It is the sword that Elendil wields throughout the Second Age, all the way up to his fateful duel with the Dark Lord Sauron. However, the sword also marks a connection to his distant descendant, Aragorn. Narsil is the original blade from whose shards Andúril, Aragorn’s iconic sword from the Lord of the Rings trilogy, is forged. By introducing Narsil into the picture, The Rings of Power sets events into motion that will unfold over millennia, ultimately leading to the War of the Ring and the Return of the King. With this crucial connection between the first King of Gondor and his descendant, the first king of the Fourth Age, I can’t wait to see where The Rings of Power goes next.
Narsil’s Significance to The Lord of the Rings, Explained
After the fall of Gondor, the Shards of Narsil were passed down through the kingly line, from Elendil and Isildur all the way to Aragorn. In Tolkien’s original books, Aragorn has the sword reforged at Rivendell to take with him on his journey with the Fellowship of the Ring. The films, however, depict Narsil in reforged at the order of Lord Elrond, who then hand-delivers it to Aragorn as he prepares to ride into battle against Sauron at Minas Tirith. Upon its reforging, the blade is renamed Andúril, the Flame of the West. It is with this blade that Aragorn fights in the Battles of Pelennor Fields and the Black Gate, and it is with this blade that he reunifies the kingdoms of Men and restores the kingly line of Elendil. It is fitting that Aragorn would wield the same blade as his forefather as he follows in his footsteps, first defeating the Dark Lord and his forces, then renewing the kingdoms of Gondor and Arnor.
The Rings of Power Is Finally Giving Elendil His Time to Shine
The new set video suggests that Elendil will be more prominent in The Rings of Power Season 3. The character has had a slow progression since the beginning of the series, first appearing as little more than a recurring character in someone else’s story and gradually growing to become a major player in the war with Sauron. After staggeringly little character development for Elendil in Season 1, Season 2 finally delved deeper into the iconic warrior, depicting him as an endlessly faithful servant who will not go back on his principles no matter what. Now, Season 3 seems to be continuing this development by putting Elendil in the spotlight, depicting him as the warrior and king that J.R.R. Tolkien always intended him to be. The fact that The Rings of Power chose this video as the first real sneak peek of Season 3 suggests that Elendil, accompanied by his blade Narsil, will be one of the chief players in the storylines ahead.
