Jon Snow Spinoff Seems To Be In Jeopardy, But It May Actually Be Good
The studio is in no rush to expand the Game of Thrones universe.
The Game of Thrones prequel, House of the Dragon, exceeded expectations for both HBO and viewers. In terms of quality, the series is not inferior to the best seasons of Game of Thrones: the plot is fascinating, the actors are perfectly chosen, and debauchery and violence are present.
HBO has been planning to expand the universe through other series for several years. And one of them is a spinoff about Jon Snow.
Fans remember how many tears were shed when Night’s Watch “killed” Jon Snow at the end of the fifth season.
Fortunately, the Targaryen descendant came back to life, liberated the North from the Boltons, defeated the White Walkers and finished off Daenerys. It would seem that the character has had enough adventures, but HBO thinks otherwise.
The studio is already working on new adventures for Jon Snow.
It is only known that the events of the project will take place after the finale of Game of Thrones, and Kit Harington, who plays the title role, is working on the plot with the writers. Moreover, it was the actor who came up with the idea that impressed the showrunners.
However, HBO Drama Chief Francesca Orsi recently gave an update on the progress of the spinoff, and her comments may not be to the liking of Snow’s fans:
“We’re just working deeply with the writers to get it in shape for potential greenlight, but at this point, no, no determination on whether it can go all the way.”
Given the success of House of the Dragon, it’s surprising that the story of one of Game of Thrones’ most beloved characters is not a guaranteed project. But that can only be for the better.
If the studio wanted to quickly monetize the success of Game of Thrones, which ended four years ago, then fans would definitely have already received several spinoffs.
And a spinoff about Jon Snow, especially with Kit Harington in the title role, would have come out first. But apparently expanding the universe is taken seriously at HBO, and the showrunners are working not for quantity but for quality.
Given that the project even has Harington on board, the studio’s restraint in not rushing to release new project is admirable. Fans can be sure that if there is a Jon Snow spinoff, it will only happen when the studio is confident in its level and quality.
