Ncuti Gatwa Reacts to Rumors of His Doctor Who Series Getting Canceled After 2 Seasons

Doctor Who star Ncuti Gatwa dismisses rumors of the series being canceled.

Speaking to Variety, Gatwa and co-star Varada Sethu were asked if they could respond to rumors that the hit sci-fi series had been canceled, which are largely based in the fact that only two seasons of the show were ordered. Gatwa replied by pointing back to all his favorite moments from the currently ongoing second season of his outing as Doctor Who before noting, “My head is full of Season 2, because it’s been so epic. It’s very ironic that in a show about time travel you can’t talk about the future, but I can talk about Season 2 and how brilliant it is and how brilliant Varada is.”

Ncuti Gatwa joined Doctor Who as the Fifteenth Doctor for the modern series’ fourteenth season back in 2023, which also reintroduced the series’ numbering system and reset the clock to Season 1. The current Season 2 of Doctor Who

began with the release of “The Robot Revolution” on April 12. The episode marked the debut of Varadu Sethu as the Doctor’s latest companion, Belinda Chandra, a nurse who gets caught up in an eerily familiar cosmic crisis. Upon its release, “The Robot Revolution” was met with largely positive if somewhat middling reviews from critics.

Doctor Who Season 2 Has Earned Praise From Critics

Fans of Doctor Who have plenty to look forward to this season, as it is set to introduce a whole host of new characters portrayed by fan-favorite actors, not to mention some concepts and techniques that are entirely new to the series itself. Speaking to CBR, showrunner Russell T Davies gave fans an example with minor spoilers for the upcoming second episode, “Lux,” which will feature Alan Cumming as a cartoon come to life. Davies noted that “none of us had ever worked with hand-drawn animation,” which provided a unique challenge for the cast and crew of Doctor Who

that they were more than willing to take on.

Davies also recently confirmed “conversations” about who will eventually replace him as showrunner on Doctor Who. “I will need to slow down at some point. That’ll come. Last time it was Steven Moffat [who replaced me], that wasn’t even a day’s work, like, ‘Right, off you go,” Davies explained. “There’s thinking about that, there’s conversations about that, but it’s hard. It’s a tricky one. But [successors] better exist … imagine, I’m dead at the desk. The cliché would kill me.”
