Newest The Handmaid’s Tale Update Makes It Clear: Season 6 Is Not Coming Anytime Soon
It’s just not fair to make us wait so long.
The Handmaid’s Tale season 5 was released more than a year ago, so the fans of the dystopian series are just longing to know what’s next in the store for June and the other characters of the show. Especially assuming that season 6 will be the last one.
Will June fulfill her plan of revenge and free her soul from the horrors of Gilead? Will she finally reunite with Hannah and feel sane again? Will Serena be punished for every terrible thing she has done throughout the series, or will the writers dare to redeem her character? There are so many questions left to be answered in season 6.
Season 6 was first expected to be released in late 2023 or early 2024, however as many other shows, The Handmaid’s Tale was sidelined by the writers’ strike. In the interview with Tv Insider Matt Roush recently confirmed that, and added that when the strike began the season was still in the writing stage, so it’s safe to assume it will happen “some time in 2024,” but not anytime soon.
How Did Season 5 End?
The latest The Handmaid’s Tale season ended, as the genre suggests, on a major cliffhanger. There are so many paths for the plot to develop that it gives you a headache when you try to analyze everything.
The season finale brought June closer to death again. This time it was not Gilead that was responsible, but the huge anti-refugee movement that began in Canada after all the saved people from Gilead were transported there.
But June is not the only one in danger. After she is hit by a car and is taken to the hospital, Luke becomes so angry that he finds the man responsible for the accident and beats him to death, making him a wanted man. So they both decided to try to leave Canada with baby Nichole.
Later, Luke realized that it would be safer for June and the baby to travel alone, and he turned himself in to the authorities, leaving his loved ones on their own. At least that was what he thought. But what fans saw at the end of the movie shocked them all. When June and her baby took the train to Hawaii, Serena was already there…
What Season 6 Will Be About?
We don’t even have a trailer for the final season yet, so we have no idea how it will end. However, we can assume that it will largely revolve around Serena and June trying to figure out their relationship. Many fans are worried that Serena will even get a redemption arc, and frankly, that’s not something the fandom feels she deserves.
The show’s executive producer Bruce Miller once commented on what he feels is the main idea of season 6. He’s sure that it’s very important for June to realize who she is, to embrace her identity. Miller reminded us that the show started with a character without a real name, and the tale was about a handmaid who had a fictional word instead of a real name.
After some time, she returns to her real name, but later the story takes her back to the dark fiction and gives her another nickname. June’s journey is more than just escaping the totalitarian society that tortures half of its citizens, it is about becoming a real person again and regaining her true self.
She’s been forced to give up her whole life, so it’s only fair to give her a chance to do it in the show’s final season. Miller claimed that he didn’t want to mess it up for June and the fans and give them a fulfilling finale that everyone deserves.
