Everyone who knows how corporations work cannot watch this without a grin.
Just as many real-life doctors cannot watch Grey’s Anatomy without raising their eyebrows at the questionable professional and ethical decisions the characters make, Succession fans with first-hand knowledge of corporations and business cannot help but notice some very unrealistic details about Waystar Royco.
Of course, showing a realistic portrayal of corporate life was never the main goal of the show, although the writers do a pretty good job of making the general audience believe that all the terminology used in the meetings makes perfect sense.
The show is about family drama and trauma passed down from Logan Roy to his children and the rest of his heirs. Still, it is amusing to note some details that are very far from reality.
One such detail is Roy’s dedication to flying private jets with his key partners, family, and even colleagues.
There’s nothing wrong with flying a jet, except for the environmental impact, which Roy’s patriarch couldn’t care less about, but there are some rules that would apply to him in real life that don’t apply in the show.
For example, he wouldn’t be able to fly so easily with Karl on board, as the CEO and CFO of a large public company typically don’t fly together due to “key man risk.”
Of course, one could argue that with Karl’s level of knowledge, losing him wouldn’t really make much of a difference, but since their respective positions are signed on paper, the rules would still apply.
But that’s not all: at one point in the show, viewers can clearly see almost the entire C-Suite gathered in a private jet.
If something were to happen to them, the consequences would be truly disastrous and the business would be in serious jeopardy.
However, the writers obviously didn’t bother with this detail because they were sure that everyone would get to their destination safely.
Since he was so careless around the jets, Logan’s passing on one doesn’t seem so out of line. If anything, it seems like a logical ending to his story.
