Outlander author details Jamie Fraser’s fate in final book

Outlander’s creator Diana Gabaldon addressed the Highlander’s arc

Outlander author Diana Gabaldon has detailed the fate of her hero Jamie Fraser (played by Sam Heughan) in the novels.

The best-selling author is working on the 10th and final novel of the Outlander series titled A Blessing For A Warrior Going Out.

She wrote on Facebook confirming Jamie’s fate, quelling fan fear about the ominous book title: “No, that doesn’t mean Jamie’s going to die.”

Instead, she said it wasn’t a “death blessing”, but rather the Blessing of St. Michael, which is for a warrior embarking on an important and potentially perilous mission.

So fans can breathe a sigh of relief for now – but given Jamie’s ghost turns up in the first novel and isn’t immortal, it’s safe to say the character does meet his maker at some point.

Fans will be hoping the final novel in Gabaldon’s epic series also offers a resolution to Jamie’s ghost.

Among the cryptic clues, Gabaldon has suggested the ghost appears to be 25 years of age, around the time he fought in Culloden.

However, the American author caveated this by saying that a ghost can appear however they choose to do so, regardless of when they actually died.

Additionally, Jamie hasn’t done some sort of astral projection through the time and this really is his ghost from beyond the grave.

Gabaldon doesn’t have an end date yet on when she’ll be finished writing A Blessing For A Warrior Going Out.

Nonetheless, she did share an excerpt from the novel, which showed Jamie to be older in his years and becoming frail.

In contrast, the eighth and final season of Outlander is expected to be coming out in the not-too-distant future with Starz previously announcing it would be “soon”.

The TV adaptation and the novels are confirmed to have diverged massively following the season seven finale, which teased Faith Fraser had survived despite being stillborn.

The show will also be giving their explanation about Jamie’s ghost but it’s not apparent if this will be the same as in the book, which is expected to be published after season eight has aired.

The drama will be following an alternate storyline to source material, so readers and viewers can expect two rather different conclusions to the Outlander story across the two media.
