Laurence Dobiesz looks back fondly on his time on the time-travelling drama, even teasing a comeback.
As the end of Droughtlander comes to an end and anticipation for the news season builds, many fans are curious as to whether any familiar faces will arrive.
Starz has already delighted fans by confirming a reunion of sorts with various cast members making a return for the penultimate series, including Graham McTavish as Dougal MacKenzie, Nell Hudson as Laoghaire MacKenzie and Steven Cree as Ian Murray
But many are wondering whether they will see Tobias Menzies return as Captain ‘Black Jack’ Randall and Frank Randall or even his younger brother, Alex Randall played by Laurence Dobiesz.
In a recent interview, Dobiesz looked back to working on the show with three famous names, Sam Heughan, Caitríona Balfe and Tobias Menzies: “It was great. My scenes were with all of them, I guess.” reports the Express.
“I got to be in the thick of things with them with their characters being the most them. I was in the middle of a fight scene with Sam and he was sort of defending me.
“I can’t remember how it kicked off but his character Jamie had to bundle me into a bed and shut the door behind me to protect me. “To have that whole experience. The sets are so well made and so 360 and the lighting’s down.”
He went on to add: “So I got to do that with him and then Cait, I got an emotional scene, where I’m walking along with her, which was really lovely.
“Just the two of us and it was a tender, emotional scene, so I got to see her doing her best stuff.
“And then, of course, my dying scene, which involved those guys and Rosie playing Mary. That was a big one.
“I remember doing that on my birthday. It was my last bit of filming, I think. So it was like, ‘Oh wow, this whole experience is coming to an end.’
“And [the producers] gave us a lot of time because there was a lot going on, it was a significant bit of the show and the way Tobias found the anger after he dies.”
He went on to sing all three stars’ praises, he said: “They were so invested in it and their characters.”
He continued, revealing that it was a “collaborative approach” on set with the dialogue “stripped back” and the scene being the best it could be.
“I think by the end of it, it was an even better drama – that was testament to those guys.”
Dobiesz added: “Those guys would take the lead on all that sort of stuff, those three and you got a sense of it being their show and it really helped it grow and everyone was working together: directors, writers, which is good.”
Since starring in Outlander, Dobiesz has appeared in BBC’s series Black Earth Rising, TV show Back, podcast series Margate Murder Mystery and short film Just Do It.
He is also involved in doing voice work and recording audiobooks for fans.
Dobiesz and his wife and fellow actor Olivia Poulet are currently working on their second novel, following on from their 2021 debut 12 Hours to Say I Love You.
In fact, Outlander’s author Diana Gabaldon even read 12 Hours to Say I Love You and provided a quote for the book.
Addressing a possible return to Outlander in a flashback, Dobiesz said: “Of course, I’d love to do that. I wouldn’t give any spoilers if I did know – there’s always that possibility, which is so lovely. Of course, it would be great to return to that world.”
