Pelargir Explained: Everything To Know About The Middle-Earth City In Rings Of Power
Pelargir is briefly mentioned in The Rings of Power season 1, but the Lord of the Rings city’s history will make it an important location in season 2.
The Middle-earth city Pelargir is briefly mentioned in The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power season 1 and is shaping up to be a notable location in season 2. The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power depicts the events of the Second Age of Middle-earth, thousands of years before the LOTR movies. The series follows different branching stories of Elves, Men, and Harfoots whose lives are all interconnected through the rising evil of Sauron in Middle-earth. The series was a hi with viewers, and The Rings of Power season 2 has already wrapped production.
There are numerous cities, towns, and lands in The Rings of Power. It’s a show with a huge scope that covers the characters’ travels from the land of Valinor all the way across the Sundering Seas and all through the lands of Middle-earth and the island of Númenor. One of these mentioned towns is Pelargir. J.R.R. Tolkien’s legendarium is filled with cultures, towns, and histories that the series draws from, and while the ending of The Rings of Power has other plotlines to tie up and locations to visit in season 2, Pelargir is a notable city and season 1 will not be the last time it’s mentioned.
Pelargir Is A Port City In The Lord Of The Rings Universe
In The Rings of Power season 1, episode 7, “The Eye”, a massive volcanic eruption in the Southlands causes chaos and destruction across once habitable and populated lands. With their homes destroyed, the inhabitants of the land have to choose what to do next. A large contingent of survivors led by Bronwyn declare Pelargir as the safest and closest place to go, and they set off on the journey to the city. Pelargir is a large port city in Middle-earth in the southern portion of the land that would eventually become Gondor in the Third Age.
As one of the Númenóreans port cities in Middle-earth, Pelargir is a powerful outpost of the Kingdom and safe from the chaos and danger in the rest of Middle-earth. During a time of great political unrest and social decay in the history of Númenor, the Faithful (those who still opposed Sauron) fled to Pelargir, making it a bastion for good. The beginnings of this decay are already apparent in The Rings of Power season 1. Pelargir remained a powerful port city well into the Third Age, making Aragorn’s reaction to its burning in the extended edition of The Return of the King more significant.
How Pelargir Ties Into Isildur’s Story In Rings of Power Season 2
Though Isildur is left for dead after the eruption of Orodruin in The Rings of Power, any Lord of the Rings fan knows that the Númenórean still has an important part to play in the events of the Second Age. Sure to return in season 2, Isildur has an important history with Pelargir. When the corruption of Númenor is complete, the Faithful, including Isildur and his family, flee to the mainland of Middle-earth. Their boats are split up and Isildur lands at the mouth of the Anduin, close to Pelargir.
It’s out of the Anduin and Pelargir that the Southern Kingdom of Gondor is founded. The people living in these Middle-earth cities are key to supporting Isildur and his fight against Sauron and Mordor. Bronwyn and the rest of the people who fled the destroyed Southlands for Pelargir will be key to Isildur returning in The Rings of Power season 2.
