‘Rings of Power’ Star Teases “Horrendous” Things Coming for One Iconic Character

The Rings of Power spent a lot of time trying to hide the identity of one character, Daniel Weyman‘s Grey Wizard, who was revealed in the final episodes of Season 2 to be – as many had already assumed – Gandalf. Now, where he goes in the coming season is very much an open canvas, but for Weyman, he believes that there will be some “horrendous” errors made by his characters before he can become the wise old wizard that fans have known since The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings.

Speaking to Deadline, Weyman addressed his excitement to dive deeper into the character and show his continuing evolution. He said:

“I’m excited for this plethora of possible pitfalls, errors and failings that young Gandalf can learn from. Literally anything could happen because the only way we’re going to see a wise being later on is if he does some pretty horrendous accidental things and puts his foot in the wrong places and has to pick it up and learn again. So I’m hoping for lots of that kind of action just so that we can see him develop and learn how he gets to be the wizard that we all love.”

The conclusion of Season 2 left many storylines hanging, with the island nation of Númenor in chaos, Sauron defeating the Elven kingdom of Eregion, the Dwarven realm of Khazad-dûm in upheaval as Durin III sacrificed himself to the mighty Balrog in one of the most visually pleasing scenes of the series, and the Stranger’s true identity being finally confirmed as Gandalf. However, there will be no immediate aftermath for any of these stories, as it was confirmed on the series’ official Instagram account that Season 3 will begin after a sizable time jump. The announcement read:

“Jumping forward several years from the events of Season 2, Season 3 takes place at the height of the War of the Elves and Sauron, as the Dark Lord seeks to craft the One Ring that will give him the edge he needs to win the war and conquer all Middle-earth at last.”

While The Rings of Power has continued to divide fans, Amazon MGM Studios is clearly committed to seeing through their five-season plan for the Tolkein-based series. With Warner Bros. Discovery ramping up their own Lord of the Rings output again, starting with The Hunt for Gollum releasing in 2027, there is a lot of new content centered around Tolkien’s incredible epic to come. Not all of it may please everyone, but it will certainly drive viewership numbers and box office takings for some time to come.
