This is the story with no happy ending.
Just because we as humans default to a happy ending in every story doesn’t mean that every writer has to take that into account. There are not many TV shows that are brave enough to portray tragedy truthfully, and every time they do, it ends in backlash and controversy.
We’ve yet to see how The Handmaid’s Tale ends, but there’s one thing we can already prepare for: the feeling of devastation.
Whether or not Gilead completely collapses, there has already been too much trauma endured by all the characters, and too many deaths caused by the system, to call the finale a happy one.
For June in particular, the most heartbreaking scene may also be the most long-awaited. If she’s ever able to reconcile with Hannah, it won’t be the reunion we’re all hoping for.
After the heartbreaking scene of June’s reunion with her daughter Hannah in season 2 of the series, all fans wanted to see them reunited. Unfortunately, with every year that passed, the chances of getting them back became less and less, and with every failure, they seemed to grow further and further away from each other.
Now, with the final season 6 on the horizon, not many viewers still have any hope of seeing this mother-daughter duo meet again. As Hannah said before, she has new parents now, and being raised by them for so many years has probably influenced her thinking too much to ever feel for her biological parents.
June, on the other hand, has been through so much, and has been hurt so deeply by every single torture she’s had to endure in her life, that she wouldn’t be able to take her daughter’s rejection lightly. While it’s not in her character to give up and stop trying, it might be the best scenario we could ask for.
As of today, there is no news about when season 6 of The Handmaid’s Tale will be released. All the fans know is that season 6 is definitely coming, and that it will definitely be the last one.
