Teen Wolf: Why Scott Turning Against Stiles Made No Sense
In Teen Wolf’s fifth season, Scott easily allows himself to turn against Stiles. But, given their history, the decision makes no sense.
In Teen Wolf’s fifth season, the show decides to place Scott and Stiles on opposite sides of a significant conflict. After Stiles’ actions of self-defense result in Donovan dying, Stiles is horrified. He did not have evil desires, nor was this a pre-meditated attack. However, Stiles, knowing he was responsible for Donovan’s death and that the proof was missing, goes back to his life, terrified and guilty, but does not tell anyone. Terrified of losing Scott if Scott knew what Stiles had done, he puts it off, and in that decision, Theo Raeken gets the opening he needs to push Scott and Stiles further apart when he makes it seem that Stiles had actively decided to murder Donovan.
Although Scott initially denies the claims, it does not take much for Scott to accept that Stiles is a murderer. After seeing blood on a wrench, Scott accepts Theo’s words, having been openly trusting of Theo since he arrived in Beacon Hills. When Scott sees Stiles for the first time after Theo’s accusation, Scott does not question Stiles directly. Due to the lack of clarification, the duo is having slightly different conversations, leading Scott to believe Stiles wanted to kill Donovan. Although Scott had always been against killing, it made no sense that it was so easy for him to believe his best friend, who had never shown murderous tendencies in the past, could be so capable of going against that belief.
They’ve Been Best Friends For Years
Scott and Stiles had been best friends for several years, and for so long, they were the only person the other had. Having spent years relying on the other, there was almost nothing Scott and Stiles did not know about each other. So, how was it so easy for Scott to believe his oldest friend was capable of cold-blooded murder? Although Stiles had suggested that maybe it would be easier to kill their enemies in the past, he never actively tried to kill an innocent person, nor was he usually the one to deliver a lethal blow.
The only time Stiles acted violently was while the Nogitsune was possessing him. Otherwise, he tended to carry a baseball bat with him for self-defense against supernatural creatures and never attempted to kill others when there was another option. In the past, Scott and Stiles had gone above and beyond to save and help each other, so Scott not taking the time to hear Stiles out is a confusing turn of events. Given their unwillingness to keep talking, Stiles and Scott’s friendship hits a rift as they struggle to figure out how to get it back on track, or if they can, as their Pack continues to fall apart.
Stiles Had Admitted To Being Suspicious Of Theo Previously
From the first time Theo appears, Stiles makes it clear he does not trust him. Something about Theo seems off; whether it be his identity, potential ulterior motives, or something else, Stiles is sure Theo is not trustworthy. But, where Stiles is not trusting, Scott is open and willing to trust Theo. Theo says and does all the right things for a while and quickly gains Scott’s trust. Still, Stiles is suspicious and makes it clear the entire time. So, even if Scott is so willing to trust Theo, why does he trust him more than Stiles, especially since Stiles had already claimed to be suspicious? Stiles has been correct numerous times before and has remained loyally at Scott’s side.
So, on a topic that is so important, why is Scott willing to hear out someone he has barely spent time with over his closest friend? Why does Scott not at least humor Stiles’ suspicions and not quickly believe Theo’s claims about what Stiles had done? Although Scott eventually realizes Theo’s dangerous ulterior motives and that Stiles’ actions had indeed been self-defense, it still becomes confusing that Scott could be so willing to take someone’s word over Stiles when he can already feel the breaks in his Pack. Why wasn’t Scott spending more time trying to bring his group back together instead of confiding in Theo? Although breaking up Scott and Stiles is one of the most significant moves Teen Wolf could make, the events that led to that do not quite match the history of their friendship.
What Does Scott Truly Think Of Stiles
Stiles has proved time and time again that he is Scott’s right hand. Stiles is more loyal to Scott than anyone else, always at his side, trying to help him. So, at what point did Scott start thinking Stiles could do something so dark? Scott has always looked out for Stiles and done everything he could to save or be there for him. Stiles supported Scott after his initial werewolf bite and was there for him through everything leading up to Donovan’s death.
Even afterward, when Stiles tries to explain how self-defense is justified, Scott insists that they save people, not kill innocent victims. But, it has always been clear that Scott looked at Stiles as a brother and loved him. However, their season five rift suggests that Scott may have secretly thought Stiles was capable of much darker behavior. But that does not match their past. Why would Scott believe Stiles would kill someone just because Theo said so? Scott had never given the impression that he believed Stiles was willing to go so far and even acknowledged that Stiles’ worst actions during the Nogitsune’s possession were never Stiles himself but the Nogitsune’s hold over him.
