The Handmaid’s Tale Already Hinted How June Can Never Truly Win
The Handmaid’s Tale may still have one season left, but it’s already obvious that June can’t win in the end because of the upcoming spin-off.
The Handmaid’s Tale still has one season left, with season 6 being the end of the show, but its already proven that June can’t win. Although the show follows a litany of characters, June has always been the main focus, with the show centering on her quest to reunite with Hannah and bring Gilead down. June has spent five seasons attempting to reach this goal to no avail, and although many viewers may hope that The Handmaid’s Tale season 6 is where June finally wins, it had already been hinted that she won’t.
The Handmaid’s Tale tells the story of Gilead, a dystopian theocracy that forces women into sex slavery and executes anyone who doesn’t live up to Gilead’s strict moral code. The Handmaid’s Tale adapts the Margaret Atwood novel of the same name, and is widely regarded as a fantastic adaptation of the book’s events. However, The Handmaid’s Tale season 1 covers almost everything from the book, with subsequent seasons using the novel as a jumping-off point to tell an original story. Because of this, nobody knows for sure what’s going to happen to June – but there are some guesses that can be made based off the series as a whole.
The Story Of The Testaments Means That June Can’t Win In The Handmaid’s Tale
While the show was still running, Margaret Atwood released a sequel to The Handmaid’s Tale in 2019 called The Testaments. The Testaments takes place 15 years after the events of the original story, featuring many returning characters. However, there is one notable exception: June. June isn’t around for The Testaments main story, with the book instead focusing on June’s children, Hannah and Nichole. However, Hannah is living in Gilead while Nichole is living in Canada, each with adopted parents and no idea who June is.
Considering that Hulu is making its own The Testaments spin-off series, June won’t be able to reunite with her kids at the end of The Handmaid’s Tale season 6. Gilead is also around in The Testaments, with it still being the same powerful force it is in The Handmaid’s Tale. This means that June will have to be gone in Hulu’s The Testaments, not accomplishing her goal of rescuing Hannah or taking down Gilead. It seems that June will have to lose at the end of The Handmaid’s Tale season 6, meaning that the show is preparing a tragic ending.
Why June Could Reappear In The Testaments
If Hulu’s The Testaments sticks with the book’s story, June could reappear in the show. At the end of the novel, Nichole and Hannah discover who their mother is. They manage to track down June, who has been living under the protection of the Canadian government since the events of The Handmaid’s Tale. So, although June may not find success in The Handmaid’s Tale season 6, she could get a heartwarming cameo in The Testaments.
