The Handmaid’s Tale S6 May Surprise Fans By Shifting Focus From June To Another Major Character
It’s time we learn more about Aunt Lydia.
The dark, disturbing, yet extremely engaging Hulu series The Handmaid’s Tale has had fans on the edge of their seats for 5 seasons now. Since its debut in 2017, the show has been covering the story of June Osborne as she tries to escape the horrible reality she is trapped in.
The world of Gilead seemed to break everyone who had to live there for any length of time. But all the while, the show focused on how June was trying to stay sane. The rest of the characters only got a little backstory.
However, that’s about to change in the final season of the show. As you remember, season 5 ended with June in even more trouble as she was forced to leave Canada and somehow got stuck with Serena Joy. But as it was established, the most important story of the last season will not be about June.
While it’s certainly essential to find out if June will find Hannah and reunite with baby Nichole, the show’s writers have an even more important task: to cover Aunt Lydia’s future and set the stage for The Handmaid’s Tale’s upcoming sequel.
The Testaments will soon be adapted into its own Hulu series, with Aunt Lydia as the main character. So The Handmaid’s Tale has its last chance to show how Aunt Lydia joined Mayday.
In the new show, she will be developed into an entirely new character. Instead of a strong-willed Gilead follower, she becomes a true rebel with a desire to tear the regime apart from within.
Fans are already sharing their theories on how such a change of heart is even possible.
“She may have become so disillusioned by the corruption of government leaders that she wanted to “bring it all down.” Maybe she had hope that a religious government wouldn’t lead to the corruption seen in nearly all people who hold power. When she saw there was no difference, she acted out of revenge because she realized the men in power were no different,” Redditor Joannemg8822 said.
Well, for now, all we can do is wait until The Handmaid’s Tale season 6 is up on Hulu. Until then, there are only so many theories to discuss how Aunt Lydia could believably join Mayday and bring down Gilead.
