The Rookie Season 7 Needs To Bring 1 Feds Character Back Full Time (& It’s Not Simone)
Following the season 6 finale of The Rookie, anything is possible regarding The Rookie: Feds cameos, but one former cast member in particular needs to make a comeback in season 7. The ABC police procedural TV series, created by Alexi Hawley, has been one of the network’s best shows since its premiere in 2018. As a result, ABC ordered a spinoff — The Rookie: Feds — which starred Niecy Nash-Betts as Simone Clark, a middle-aged woman who leaves her career as a school counselor behind to become an FBI agent.
Even though Nash-Betts brought some star power to The Rookie: Feds, the show failed to gain any traction on the network during its first season. So, because of its low ratings, industry changes, and the 2023 actors and writers strikes, ABC canceled The Rookie: Feds after only one season. While the spinoff might not have exhibited the same promising qualities that The Rookie did during its earlier seasons, The Rookie: Feds contained a cast of many interesting characters, many of whom are worthy of cameos in the original series.
Nathan Fillion Confirmed The Rookie Season 7 Will Feature More Feds Cameos
As some may recall, the season 6 finale of The Rookie excitingly featured the return of Felix Solis as Matt Garza, Britt Robertson as Laura Stensen, and Kevin Zegers as Brendon Acres from The Rookie: Feds. The trio assisted John Nolan and Nyla Harper as they tracked down Monica Stevens in Argentina, and that episode might not be the last time fans see them. During The Rookie’s panel at San Diego Comic-Con 2024, star and producer Nathan Fillion discussed the potential of seeing more The Rookie: Feds cameos after season 6. Per Deadline, Fillion said:
“The short answer is yes. We are trying to create a universe in which we can all exist. The title and the idea that it was my show was always just a trick. It’s always been an ensemble cast. I’m so very pleased to be able to say this program can, at any one time, rest squarely on the shoulders of any one member of this cast.”
Fillion didn’t confirm which The Rookie: Feds characters the producers were trying to bring back in The Rookie season 7. The door is seemingly open for any of the Feds to return, including the three featured in the season 6 finale and the others who missed out on the fun. However, one character in particular (who wasn’t a part of the spinoff’s main cast) should be a priority for the ABC police procedural TV show.
Michelle Núñez’s Elena Flores Should Become A Series Regular In The Rookie
Michelle Núñez’s Elena Flores was undoubtedly the most underrated and underused character in The Rookie: Feds, and she should get her time to shine in the original series. Núñez was only a recurring member of the cast of The Rookie: Feds. But she should (and could very easily) become a series regular in The Rookie. Elena is Matt Garza’s niece and the Special Investigative Unit’s tech analyst in the spinoff, and her youthful nature was a breath of fresh air in the show, something that The Rookie could benefit from.
Elena’s personality is reminiscent of the rookies in The Rookie season 1. She is naive, starry-eyed, and eager to impress, and if Núñez joined the main cast of The Rookie, her character could offer the ABC series something that has been missing as of late. Plus, out of all the spinoff’s characters, it would be the easiest to explain why Elena transferred to the LAPD. Unlike Simone, Garza, Carter, Brendon, and Laura, Elena isn’t an FBI agent and therefore tied down to the FBI. Perhaps the LAPD is looking for new tech analysts.
What Other Feds Characters Will Likely Return In The Rookie Season 7?
Aside from Elena, several other characters from The Rookie: Feds could join The Rookie cast following the spinoff’s cancelation. Since Garza, Brendon, and Laura already had cameos in the season 6 finale, it would make sense if they teamed up again with the LAPD in future episodes. Carter Hope, Simone’s training agent, could also make an appearance. Unfortunately, though, with Niecy Nash-Betts’ busy schedule, it might be more difficult to get her to reprise her role as Simone in The Rookie (but not impossible).
