The Rookie’s Most Exciting Couple Gets A Positive Update About Their Future In Season 8: “We’ll Try To Keep It Going”

While there are several questions about what the new season will mean for the fan-favorite pairing of Tim (Eric Winter) and Lucy (Melissa O’Neil), another on-screen duo has been building support. Rodge, played by Hawley’s son, Zander Hawley, and Celina (Lissbeth Chavez) could be in store for a big year ahead.
In an update from TVLine, Hawley addressed the future of Celina and Rodge. Although he acknowledged that happy couples don’t always result in the most dramatic plots, he did note that the chemistry between the actors is strong and there will be an effort to keep it going:
“We’ll see. I mean, they’re both young, and ultimately a show full of happy relationships is not as dramatic as as it could be. But I think they’re adorable together, and Liz sparkles [in their scenes], so yeah, we’ll try to keep it going.”
What This Means For The Rookie Season 8
The Banter Continues
Rodge is a recent addition to The Rookie‘s cast of characters, joining in season 7 as Rodge Bronson. He’s charming but awkward, gaining some notoriety for his Daddy Cop song, which is a reference to John Nolan (Nathan Fillion). The friendship he builds with Celina is spotlighted in the season 7 episode “Chaos Agent”, which shows how well the duo plays off each other.
They’ve added a bit of levity and rejuvenation to the long-running procedural, especially when contrasted with Chenford. Tim and Lucy have been through thick and thin together, navigating ups and downs and the loaded question of how to move forward. Rodge and Celina, however, are at the start of their potential romantic journey.

It’s Fun To Watch Them Grow

Hawley mentions the fact that it’s not always in the best interest of a show to write happy couples, since it can lessen the dramatic stakes of the story. But on the other hand, after The Rookie season 7 ending, there needs to be some balance between the light and the dark.
Rodge and Celina are in a good position to provide that little bit of lightness. It also makes them, in a way, particularly important to The Rookie as it moves forward. Though they may not be a couple just yet, they will at least share scenes.
