’The Rookie’s Showrunner Teases a Big Season 8 Arc Coming for This Fan-Favorite Character

The Rookie Season 8 could be huge for ADA Wesley Evers (Shawn Ashmore). The legal powerhouse has seen a steady career growth throughout the series, starting as legal counsel and advocate to an assistant district attorney. Season 7 introduced a new arc where the district attorney race began, and some parties threw their names in. However, Wesley was left with a huge opportunity where he could be the next DA, giving him more power and control to make the changes that he’s been fighting for. The Rookie’s showrunnner Alexi Hawley told TV Line that the writer’s room is actively working on charting a course for that arc. “The writers room literally started yesterday [April 14], but we’re sniffing around a bit of where to take that story,” Hawley, said, adding:

“It would certainly make sense for Wesley, who was a defense attorney and believes very strongly in righting the wrongs of an injust justice system. He’s an assistant DA, they have not a ton of power, so becoming the DA would give him an ability to shake things up. So, we’re definitely kicking the tires on that idea.”

“I’m a little allergic to politics in storytelling, just because I feel like it sometimes could just be the least interesting storyline,” Hawley previously told Collider when a similar question was asked. However, Welsey running for DA would be a natural trajectory in his career and the end goal would be worth all the politicking in the world. “I do think that we’re going to make a run at trying to figure out how to — because look, I mean, Wesley started as a defense attorney. He feels very passionately about trying to correct the injustice in the justice system,” Hawley explained, then added:

He joined the DA’s office to try and make a difference, but being an assistant district attorney has a lot less power to affect change than being the DA. I think there’s definitely some allure there. I think we’re definitely talking about that, sure.”

Based on Hawley’s comments in both instances, it sounds like he’s leaning into exploring this story but is not quite sure. Many factors come into play before the writers settle on a character’s direction and once the season comes together, we’ll have a definite direction for Wesley. He could very well decide it’s not worth it after what happened to Del Monte (Michael Trucco).
