In the interview, Chase claims that his “hysterical” mother inspired the series, with their relationship sticking with Chase throughout his life. Chase was looking for a way to write about his relationship with his mother when he came up with the idea for The Sopranos, leading to the show’s creation.
Although Chase has negative things to say about his relationship with his mother, she apparently wasn’t nearly as bad as Livia Soprano. Chase explains that his mom never tried to kill him, something that can’t be said for Livia and Tony. However, he does tell a story about his mother threatening to poke his eye out with a fork, something that would be completely in character for Livia to do.

While Livia Soprano’s real-life origins are interesting, this backstory makes her much sadder. Tony and Livia’s relationship in The Sopranos is incredibly unhealthy, but to a viewer of the series, it all seems like fiction.
