“Things We’re Excited About”: ‘Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum’ Gets “Dynamite” Update at Warner Bros.

The new Middle Earth project will be produced by Warner Bros. Pictures, and Pam Abdy, co-chair/CEO of Warner Bros. Pictures, has offered an exciting update on the film. Per Deadline, Abdy has revealed some of the film’s progress, saying: “Adding to things we’re excited about, Andy Serkis doing the Gollum Film…” the CEO said. Adding that the studio has also been in communication with The Hunt for Gollum co-writer Philippa Boyens as well, she revealed, “We just had a dynamite check-in with Philippa Boyens on Gollum, and I think we’re about to get that script in May.”
‘The Hunt for Gollum’ Has Been Slightly Delayed

The Hunt for Gollum will be an interesting angle to approach Middle Earth from, as Serkis’ Gollum/Smeagol was a pivotal character in how the story of the Third Age eventually got resolved. The film was initially meant to premiere in 2026, but in February, director Serkis offered an update on the film’s timeline, saying, “Yeah, it is not 2026. It was originally going to be December 2026. It is going to be December 2027,” Serkis said. “We are right at the beginning of the writing process. We will be prepping later this year. Prep takes a good chunk of time, six or seven months, and then we will be shooting next year. So, it backs into that December 2027 release date.”
