‘Time To Wrap It Up’ Yellowjackets Season 4 Is On Its Way, But Should It Be The Last?

Now that the Showtime drama has been renewed for season 4, Yellowjackets fans are even more curious about where the story goes from here. When the season 1 premiere aired on Showtime in November 2021, viewers were drawn into the bleak tale of a girls’ soccer team whose plane crashes in the woods in Canada. They descend into cannibalism as they form new connections and manipulate one another, and the show moves from the teen to the adult timeline effortlessly.
Since the Yellowjackets showrunners Ashley Lyle, Jonathan Lisco, and Bart Nickerson have mentioned a five-year plan, fans wonder if that means there could be two more seasons of the show. But would that be a good thing, and should the dark drama wrap up before then?
Should Yellowjackets Season 4 Be The Final Season?
While fans are still deeply invested in the overall mystery, some feel that Yellowjackets should end with season 4. Several fans discussed this in a Reddit thread and Redditor @LogicalEgo wrote:
Redditor @supercoolpartydude shared their thoughts:
“I’m in the minority, but season 3 redeemed season 2. Problem is going forward, a lot of the girls fates are already known now. Takes a lot of the tension out from the teen timeline and they are running out of adults.”
Redditor @herecomestherebuttal agreed:
“some plot lines have gotten a little threadbare and some are overtly ridiculous. Time to wrap it up.”
While several fans would be fine if Yellowjackets season 4 was the last time they saw the teen and adult versions of these harsh but engaging characters, the showrunners hoped to make five seasons of the series. Since it can be tough when creators and writers don’t get to finish telling the story that they set out to tell, it would be a shame if the show was canceled after only one more season. While not every mystery has to be explained, two more seasons would be more than enough time to fully explore each adult character’s feelings about their time in the wilderness, which is the point of the show.

Since fans aren’t sure if there will be a Yellowjackets season 5, the next season shouldn’t end on a cliffhanger. That way, if the show concludes with the season 4 finale, fans won’t be frustrated and wondering where the story goes next. It would be better if season 4 explains the rescue and hints at the aftermath in some flashforwards, which was a great narrative technique used in the later seasons of Lost. Then, if there is a fifth season, the show can dive deeper into how the girls balance being back home with the horrors they saw in the wilderness. But, since fans will learn a bit about this in season 4, they will get some of the answers they’ve been seeking. Most of all, viewers want to know how those scared girls trying to be powerful in the Canadian woods turn into such cold-hearted adults.
What Has The Cast Said About Yellowjackets Season 4?
The cast of Yellowjackets has thought just as carefully about season 4 of the hit show as fans have, and many actors have shared thoughts in various interviews. Liv Hewson, who plays the teenage version of Van Palmer, told Teen Vogue:
Hewson continued:
“There’s a lot there, to say nothing of how they each interact with the rest of the team once they get back. Everybody ends up at Shauna’s wedding at some point.”
Fans and cast members alike are also interested in how Shauna Sadecki’s story continues in Yellowjackets season 4. Sophie Nélisse, who plays teen Shauna, spoke to Elle about the reason why her character wishes to stay in the woods where the soccer team ends up. Nélisse’s comments speak to how interesting it will be to dive into Shauna’s psyche in the next season. The actress said:
“It’s the only place where she’s ever been able to be truly herself. She’s never gotten to experience these sides of herself, or fully feel confident and embrace this darkness. There’s this sense of liberation for her. It’s so thrilling and exciting and she’s terrified of going back to a life of normalcy.”
