“We’ve Filmed It a Couple of Different Ways”: ‘Outlander’s Caitríona Balfe Doesn’t Know How the Series Ends Even After Filming It [Exclusive]

The final season of Outlander just got a colossal update from one of its leading stars. Outlander follows Claire Beauchamp Randall (Caitríona Balfe), a WWII nurse who goes back in time to Scotland in 1743. She meets the dashing Highland warrior Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan) and falls for him while also landing in the middle of an epic rebellion. Starz confirmed more than two years ago that Outlander would end with Season 8, and the final season even wrapped filming back in September 2024, but it’s still lacking an official premiere date. Caitríona Balfe recently sat down for a chat with Collider’s Steve Weintraub to talk about her upcoming action movie, The Amateur, and she teased an emotional season finale:

“Wrapping Outlander was very emotional. Everybody came to set, which was just very weird because they gave Sam [Heughan] and I a seven-page scene that was just full of dialogue to finish on, and yet the whole studio was full of execs and all the cast and everybody. So, there were lots and lots and lots of tears. I’m just very proud of the show and I’m excited for the fans to see it. I just hope we’ve done right by them.”

When asked how she thought Outlander will end, Balfe confirmed that she couldn’t speculate even if she wanted to, due to the series shooting a few variations of the ending:

I don’t even know the ending. We’ve sort of filmed it in a couple of different ways, and Matt is going to decide, which I think is great so I can’t lie. But I think they’re going to be satisfied. We brought a lot of people back. A lot of the story is explained. I hope they are anyway.”

Outlander is based on the popular series of books from Diana Gabaldon, who is also credited as a writer on all 91 episodes of the hit series. The show was created for television by Ronald D. Moore, the Star Trek and Battlestar Galactica veteran who has also been tapped as the showrunner for Prime Video’s new God of War series. Moore recently sparked controversy among the God of War fanbase when he admitted he hadn’t played any of the God of War games. His first big non-Star Trek gig came in 2000 when he penned the script for Mission: Impossible II, the sequel to the original Mission: Impossible movie starring Tom Cruise. He also co-created the space sci-fi series For All Mankind for Apple TV+ with Matt Wolpert and Ben Nedivi; the show stars Joel KinnamanMichael Dorman, and Wrenn Schmidt.
