Why 90 Day Fiancé’s Mahmoud Isn’t The Villain In Nicole Relationship

The 90 Day Fiancé franchise might have a new villain with Mahmoud El Sherbiny. However, it’s possible that he’s not the problem in his relationship.

The 90 Day Fiancé franchise appears to have a new “baddie” in the form of Mahmoud El Sherbiny from 90 Day Fiancé: the Other Way, although viewers are now arguing that his wife Nicole Sherbiny’s the problem. Mahmoud’s whiny, hypocritical, and controlling behavior has established the Egyptian man as a 90DF franchise villain. However, not all 90 Day Fiancé fans think he’s to blame for Nicole’s unhappiness, and they have a point.

Nicole and Mahmoud are one 90 Day Fiancé franchise duo who married before their season. The couple was several years into their marriage when they aired their romance on The Other Way season 4. American Nicole has spent the entire season at odds with her conservative husband, as she doesn’t want to follow his strict rules about who she can interact with, and what she can wear. This has led to Mahmoud earning steady viewer criticism. However, there are also viewers who don’t think he’s to blame for Nicole’s miserable life in Egypt.

Why Nicole Isn’t Mahmoud’s Victim

Reddit user u/SenorDipstick started a thread to say that Nicole has agency over her life. That Redditor doesn’t want viewers to blame Mahmoud for her circumstances. “Nicole is a grown woman… Nobody is ‘forcing’ her to do anything. She’s chosen, as a nearly 40-year-old woman, to be with him for over 3 years,” the user wrote. It’s easy to agree with this statement, as Nicole is her own woman.

Other viewers agreed that Nicole should own her life choices. They think she’s to blame for her unhappy circumstances if she doesn’t want to live a conservative life with Mahmoud. “I hate her victim mentality. He is a man child. She is a spineless wimp with no discernible personality,” one critic pointed out. “Nicole has her own power,” the original poster added. While these comments were harsh, it’s clear that she does bear some responsibility for the issues in her love life.

Nicole & Mahmoud Are Equally To Blame

While Mahmoud has been receiving the majority of blame from The Other Way season 4 viewers, a number of fans find both halves of the couple to be at fault. Each “half” is stubbornly rooted in their convictions. However, both of them have chosen to be with partners with opposite viewpoints.

“And the fact that they’ve been fighting over the hijab issue for 3 years!! Like divorce already,” one exasperated user wrote. “Their entire relationship has been an argument…about the exact same issues. Maybe bringing Mahmoud to the US will fix all of their problems. /s,” a sarcastic user said, clearly frustrated. These remarks feel valid, in light of the fact that Nicole’s a grown woman who isn’t helpless.

Overall, it appears that many The Other Way season 4 viewers agree that Mahmoud and Nicole share responsibility for their unhappy marriage. While Mahmoud is blasted for being controlling, Nicole still chose to marry someone whom she knew had different beliefs. She then chose not to either alter her beliefs, or seek someone who embraced her way of life. The same argument can be made for Mahmoud, as he refuses to budge on his conservative views, even though he married a liberal Western woman. Such qualities make Mahmoud and Nicole equally flawed humans, in a possibly doomed 90 Day Fiancé franchise relationship.
