Why Did House of the Dragon’s Velaryons Simply Vanish in Game of Thrones?
House Velaryon is one of the many noble houses in George Martin’s world. Their influence on the history of Westeros is considerable.
The Velaryons are known for their prowess at sea, as they are considered some of the best sailors and shipbuilders in the Seven Kingdoms. But where do they stand in the Game of Thrones era?
The history of House Velaryon can be traced back to the time of the Valyrian Lords, where their ancestors were powerful dragonlords.
When the Doom of Valyria occurred, the Velaryons fled with other Valyrian houses to Dragonstone, where they settled and became one of the first noble families of Westeros.
And despite a significant role in the prequel series, House Velaryon never appeared in Game of Thrones.
This was due to an era called the Dance of the Dragons. Almost nothing remained of the renowned House Velaryon during the famous Targaryen War.
The noble Velaryons have always sworn allegiance to the Dragon, so when Robert Baratheon rebelled, the family was shattered.
The mighty king drove the lords of the sea from their castle at Dragonstone and forced them to pledge their loyalty to him.
By the time Game of Thrones began, only echoes of the once-great Velaryon remained.
In A Song of Ice and Fire, however, they are represented by a rather small house. It’s worth noting that the Velaryons were mentioned in Game of Thrones, but only in the book. The showrunners decided not to include the house in the series.
But this is not the only case of a legendary name not being brought up in the show.
For example, the famous Hightowers, who also play a major role in the House of the Dragon, have never appeared in the Game of Thrones series.
House Velaryon may not be a major player in A Song of Ice and Fire, but their contribution to the history and lore of Westeros cannot be ignored.
Fans have yet to see the second season of House of the Dragon.
The next installment of the show will focus on the famous Targaryen War, in which the Velaryons play an active role.
