Will ‘The Gilded Age’ Return for Season 4? Here’s What We Know

Carrie Coon is “optimistic” about a fourth season.

With dazzling Newport mansions, an ever-changing social hierarchy, and even a John Singer Sargent appearance, HBO’s The Gilded Age has lasting popularity. It’s a series that knows its strengths—eye candy and society drama—and continues to lean in. The third season, which ended on August 10, 2025, delved further into the conflicts between old and new money, the politics of marriage, and even the era’s technological advances.

But fans want more—and they’re in luck. The show was just renewed for a fourth season. While we don’t yet have a premiere date for the next chapter, here’s everything we know so far about the Julian Fellowes show’s season four. We’ll update this page as we learn more.

Will there be a Season 4 of The Gilded Age?

Yes, indeed. On July 28, 2025, HBO announced that The Gilded Age was renewed for season four. The show has been a hit for the network, and its audience continues to grow over time. The season three finale reached five million U.S. cross-platform viewers in its first 3 days of availability, a new series high for the show, according to Variety.

“We couldn’t be prouder of the undeniable viewership heights The Gilded Age has achieved this season,” said Francesca Orsi, EVP, HBO Programming and head of HBO drama series and films, via Deadline. “Transporting us to 1880s New York City, Julian Fellowes and the enormously talented cast and crew have created a ‘cant-miss it’ entertainment experience from week to week, and we’re delighted to continue exploring these characters’ grand ambitions for what we promise will be a thrilling fourth season.”

When will season 4 premiere?

HBO has not yet announced a release date. Historically, seasons one and two premiered a little under two years apart (in January 2022 and October 2023, respectively) and season three was delayed due to the writers’ and actors’ strikes, premiering in June 2025.

Filming Is About to Begin

Yesterday, February 23, actor Cynthia Nixon posted on Instagram that it was supposed to be her first day of shooting the next season of The Gilded Age. However, due to the blizzard in New York City, filming was cancelled. But, it’s likely set to start once the snow has cleared.

Even before the renewal, Carrie Coon was “optimistic” about a fourth season.

Coon, who plays Bertha Russell, commented on renewal during an interview with Variety last year.

“Right now we’re on a one-year deal. So I’m optimistic that we could get another year,” she said. “If for some reason the numbers skyrocket this season, perhaps we’d get a multi-year deal, but that’s really above my pay grade.”

Julian Fellowes isn’t sure how many seasons the series will have.

Fellowes, who also created Downton Abbey, told TV Insider that he intentionally plans a satisfying conclusion to each season, because he isn’t sure about when the show might end.

“I don’t think we do have a final stopping place because we’re not told there’ll be a fourth series or a fifth or whatever,” said Fellowes. “But each time you have to reinvent the show in order to give it a new dynamic to fit its new proportions. And I think that is part of our job. That’s part of what you do if you write a series for television.”

He continued: “So in a sense, each [season] has to have a satisfactory conclusion given what’s taken place within the series, but an open end where we may be going to, and that is the sort of double discipline that we write to really.”
