If You Hate Doctor Who’s Matt Smith Era, Here Are 3 Reasons to Reconsider
While David Tennant’s tenth Doctor enjoys fan love that is almost ultimate, his successor, Matt Smith, provided a much more controversial performance as the next Time Lord.
If you are a fan of Matt Smith ‘s Eleventh Doctor, you might be surprised to learn that many people in the fandom do not actually enjoy his era as much as you do. However, if you belong to the latter group, then Smith’s fans have good reasoning for you to maybe reconsider your stance.
Here are three reasons why you shouldn’t be too tough on Smith’s Eleventh Doctor.
Storytelling Got Better
No matter how much you love David Tennant, many people believe that after the arrival of Matt Smith, the show’s storytelling became “deeper and more complex”, mainly because it “actively investigated a mystery”.
“In every season the big arc would be introduced early on, and he’d actively start investigating it from early on, whereas 9 and 10 rarely even realised there was an arc until towards the end, even if it was staring them in the face. It really helped 11 make his mark,” Redditor video-kid explained.
River Song
Many fans are in love with Matt Smith era simply because of how much River Song content this period blessed the fandom with. For a lot of people, the River Song storyline remains the absolute favorite, even though The Wedding of River Song is still considered to be a questionable episode at the very least.
Companions and Chemistry
Dedicated Doctor Who fans know that the show has never been about the Time Lord exclusively. His companions are also extremely important, and Eleventh Doctor’s era, many fans believe, delivered the best chemistry and interaction between Smith’s Doctor and Amy and Rory.
For many, Smith is their favorite Doctor, while the Ponds are their favorite companions as well. When they are all together, it looks like a recipe for the best show ever.
“Eleven (and Moffat’s Doctors in general) had some great depth behind their goofy or grumpy exteriors and fantastic back and forth with their companions. The dynamic of Amy and Rory as a couple going on adventures with their crazy family friend/son they never had was fantastic,” Redditor Rutgerman95 said.
So, even if you are too cringed out by River Song’s wedding or anything else about the season, maybe it’s time to give it another chance — especially now that Matt Smith is enjoying yet another round of fan love due to his performance in the Game of Thrones prequel, House of the Dragon.
