Daniel’s Karate Kid History Means Cobra Kai Season 6 Must Break Up Its Original Couple

Daniel’s torrid relationship history from school suggests that Cobra Kai season 6 should finally break off the relationship of its original couple.

Since history often repeats itself in Cobra Kai’s universe, Daniel’s Karate Kid past could mean that Cobra Kai season 6 will break up its original couple. Sam and Miguel have been among the most endearing couples in the Karate Kid franchise. Unfortunately, since they started dating in Cobra Kai’s initial seasons, their relationship has gone through several up and downs, highs and lows. While the rivalry and bad blood between their opposing dojos initially held them back from wholly committing to one another, brewing love triangles and squares further distanced them as the series progressed.

Cobra Kai season 5 marked the inception of a new phase for Miguel and Sam’s relationship because they finally found the courage to open up about their feelings for each other. While Miguel confessed that he never wanted to break up with her and only let her go because he loved her, Sam opened up about how she loved him too. This heartwarming moment from Cobra Kai season 5 seemingly rekindled their romantic relationship. However, given how Cobra Kai often weaves storylines from the Karate Kid movie series into its overarching narrative, Sam and Miguel’s future in Cobra Kai season 6 may not be as bright as it seems in Cobra Kai season 5.

Daniel & Ali’s Failed Romance Means Cobra Kai Season 6 Should Drop Sam & Miguel

Daniel and Ali’s relationship was the highlight of the first Karate Kid movie and the primary driver of Danny and Johnny’s conflict. However, even though it looked like Daniel and Ali would live happily ever after following Daniel’s All-Valley Tournament win in Karate Kid, the two only dated for a few months and broke up after graduation. As Daniel recounts, Ali left him for a UCLA football player after their senior prom. Like Daniel and Ali in the first Karate Kid movie, Sam and Miguel seem to have reached a stage in their relationship where nearly nothing could go wrong.

However, since past events from the Karate Kid movies continue shaping Cobra Kai’s present, Sam and Miguel’s relationship might reach the same climax as Danny and Ali’s. This would make sense even from a narrative standpoint, given how realistic coming-of-age stories usually highlight how couples like Miguel and Sam do not always end up together. Since Sam’s Cobra Kai arc in season 5 was anyway more about her seeking personal development, the series’ season 6 finale would be better off without any corny developments between her relationship with Miguel.

Cobra Kai Already Showed Sam & Miguel Shouldn’t Be Together

Both Sam and Miguel carry immense relationship baggage owing to their complex histories with other characters. While the dojo rivalry that initially kept them apart has significantly diminished, the two still struggle to communicate how they feel, which, as seen in season 5, often leads to misunderstandings between them. The fact that Miguel and Robby are gradually becoming good friends could also complicate their relationship in Cobra Kai season 6 because it previously led to many conflicts between them. With so many factors holding them back from being together, it seems like Cobra Kai has already established that Sam & Miguel should break up in season 6.

If the show abruptly fixes things between them without resolving all the issues that hold them back, it could risk creating narrative inconsistencies. Even if Cobra Kai season 6 tries bringing them together by gradually dissolving the obstacles that keep them apart, its runtime would not be enough to diminish the 5-season buildup that has led to the current complications of their relationship. And since Cobra Kai season 6 marks the end of the series, a logical conclusion to their narrative would involve them parting ways on a peaceful and loving note.

Why Sam & Miguel Might Succeed Where Daniel & Ali Failed

Unlike Daniel and Ali, Sam and Miguel share a love for karate. If they end up pursuing karate in the long run, their shared interest in the sport and common goal to grow as martial artists could keep them together. Sam and Miguel have also been practicing Mr. Miyagi’s teachings and philosophies from a young age. This could mean that before deciding to end things for good, they might remind themselves that, as Mr. Miyagi would say, “sometimes, what heart know, head forget.”

In Cobra Kai season 6, Sam and Miguel will also be training at the same karate dojo, working towards the shared objective of winning the Sekai Taikai. This alone could help them rebuild a strong foundation for their relationship and prevent it from failing. These developments in their relationship would also end Cobra Kai season 6 on a high note as it would establish how passion for karate can either challenge a relationship or strengthen its roots.
