Yellowjackets EP Addresses a Popular Fan Theory About Season 2’s Major Death

Yellowjackets executive producer Karyn Kusama weighs in on speculation regarding the tragic fate of Natalie Scatorccio in Season 2.

Yellowjackets executive producer Karyn Kusama recently responded to a popular fan theory about the death of Natalie Scatorccio (Juliette Lewis/Sophie Thatcher) in Season 2.

Kusama, who also directed Season 2’s finale, weighed in on speculation that Nat was marked for death after she drew the Queen of Hearts card in Yellowjackets’ 1996 timeline during an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. “That’s interesting. I could totally see that interpretation,” she said. “I see it a little differently: To me, the ‘mark’ is more the moment that she is chosen to be the new leader of the cult in the wilderness. That mentality is her true downfall. It’s her biggest shame, and biggest source of regret and sorrow. She’s wearing a heavy crown that comes with a terrible price on a moral and ethical level.”

In the same interview, Kusama also teased what fans can expect from Yellowjackets Season 3. Specifically, she noted that the mystery-thriller show’s 1996 timeline will finally see the Yellowjackets squad return home after their ordeal in the wilderness — a major plot development Kusama previously talked up during a recent podcast appearance. “The concept of that immediate aftermath of re-entry into the world, to me, there’s a whole season worth of material there,” she said. “And the fact that this is such a long game that each of these characters is facing, in terms of reorienting themselves to whatever normalcy is supposed to be.”

Yellowjackets Co-Creator Confirms a Bonus Episode is Coming

Kusama likely isn’t the only member of Yellowjackets’ cast and crew excited about Season 3’s “re-entry” storyline, either. The show’s junior actors are no doubt looking forward to saying goodbye to the challenging location shooting previously required to bring the 1996 timeline to life. Actor Warren Kole, who plays the grown-up Jeff Sadecki, previously saluted all those involved with Yellowjackets’ flashback sequences on social media, hailing their dedication to the series. “[Yellowjackets’] cast and crew have logged intense work in harsh conditions to put out this show,” he wrote. “They have really been out in it. Props to them.”

Exactly when fans will get to experience the “re-entry” plot thread is currently unclear, as Yellowjackets Season 3 still doesn’t have a premiere date. That said, series co-creator Ashley Lyle recently confirmed that a bonus Yellowjackets episode will arrive soon, to tide the mystery-thriller show’s devotees over until the third batch of episodes is ready.

Yellowjackets Seasons 1 and 2 are currently streaming on Paramount+. Season 3 does not yet have a release date.
