‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Star Camilla Luddington Says Fans Should Be ‘Stressed’ for Season 22 Premiere (Exclusive)

‘Happiness is really a threat on our show,’ the actress says about Jo’s unlucky streak of husbands.
Luddington knows with Get’ems that her kids are getting delicious snacks packed with real ingredients and tons of nutrients. That’s a load off her mind that leaves more room for worrying about her character, Jo, in the upcoming Grey’s Anatomy Season 22 premiere. Fans know that Jo is physically safe. But emotionally, she’s going to be a wreck in the new episodes when she learns that an explosion went off at Grey Sloan Memorial, and her husband, Link (Chris Carmack), was potentially at the center of it.
“Fans should be really stressed out for the premiere. I’m sorry!” she teased. “For some premieres, I can say it’s really fun and juicy. For this one, it’s stress. I’m stressed filming it. I’m stressed watching it. We were all just nervous going into that table read for all the reasons that everyone can imagine.”
According to Luddington, it’s not just the premiere that will be stressful. The aftermath of the explosion is going to last for at least two episodes, which means fans really need to be prepared for things to have gone really wrong.
“It’s a really wild first two episodes. Both episodes in the beginning are really wild. We are about to start shooting Episode 3, so buckle up,” the actress said.
Jo is no stranger to stressful times on Grey’s Anatomy. Luddington also revealed that she stumbled across an article that listed Jo as one of the unluckiest 13 characters on TV. Her first husband was abusive. Her second ditched her for his ex with only a letter to explain his actions. Link finally felt like Jo’s true happy ending, and now that is in jeopardy. Luddington confessed she should have seen tragedy coming after she learned Jo and Link were going to tie the knot.
“They had a rough season and then ended so beautifully with the wedding. We loved that. I should have known,” she laughed. “Happiness is really a threat on our show. If you get too happy, something traumatic is going to happen. I didn’t clock that at the time, but it’s what ended up happening.”
But Jo isn’t going to stand idly by while her husband and beloved co-workers are involved in a crisis.
“You would think that she’s not getting in the thick of it, but it’s Grey’s Anatomy, so of course she finds a way to get into it,” Luddington assured. “She should be at home getting a foot massaged by someone. She’s pregnant with twins, but that’s not what’s happening in the premiere.”
None of this is confirmation that Link isn’t going to make it through the latest Grey Sloan tragedy. It is just proof that Jo (and Link) need a vacation. The actress has already put in a word with the powers that be about her ideal storyline.
“I fully pitched a season where Jo ends up on a beach in Hawaii with a margarita and my Get’ems, with my snacks,” she said. But don’t worry, she’s not saying that Jo should leave the show. “That’s where she is for four episodes, and then she can come back. She can just have a nice, relaxing, little getaway.”
We fully support that plan after everything that’s happened to her.
