The wait for Grey’s Anatomy season 20 is sadly getting longer thanks to the ongoing Writers Guild of America strike. That leaves it more up in the air who may return amid network cost-cutting, not to mention the changes season 19 brought upon the show.
Season 19 was notable for Ellen Pompeo leaving as Meredith Grey. While she made a return in the season finale, Pompeo appears to be gone from the show yet might make more appearances. Confirmed gone was Kelly McCreary as her Maggie Pierce departed for a new career.
The final scene of the season had Teddy Altman (Kate Walsh) injured in a car accident, making it uncertain if she’ll return. So who can and can’t be returning for Season 20?
Predicted Grey’s Anatomy Season 20 cast
It’s confirmed that key regulars James Pickens Jr, Chandra Wilson, Kevin McKidd, Kim Raver, Camilla Luddington and Caterina Scorsone are all coming back for Season 20. It’s also likely that new hires Harry Shum Jr., Adelaide Kane, Alexis Floyd, Niko Terho and Midori Francis will be back, although nothing is confirmed yet.
So the predictions for season 20’s cast aren’t much different than season 19, barring any sudden changes or additions.

Will Kate Walsh be in Grey’s Anatomy season 20?
The fate of Teddy Altman was a big cliffhanger that the show will have to resolve in the season 20 premiere. Kate Walsh had only been listed as a recurring guest star, so it’s unsure if she’ll return on a larger basis. While there’s a chance Addison may be killed off, it’s more likely the character survives and Walsh makes a couple of appearances.
Will Ellen Pompeo be back in Grey’s Anatomy season 20?
Meredith leaving the show was a big deal, but her return in the season finale pointed to how she’s not completely gone from the series. Ellen Pompeo has made it clear she’s open to making more appearances in the future, but the time for Meredith to be a regular on the show is long done. Yet Grey’s Anatomy without Grey ever returning seems unlikely.
Will Justin Chambers return in Grey’s Anatomy season 20?
Fans of the show are still smarting from the unexpected exit of Alex Karev in season 16. With no warning, Alex left the hospital with notes explaining he’d discovered past love Izzie (Katherine Heigl) had his twins and left Jo to be with her. It wasn’t received well by fans so it might be nice for Alex to come back, make peace with Jo and get a better exit. However, there’s no word Justin Chambers is planning to return to Grey’s Anatomy, so this may be a faint hope by fans.
