What happened to Otis on Chicago Fire? Yuri Sardarov’s exit explained

Otis was a key member of the first seven seasons of Chicago Fire before tragedy struck, leading to Yuri Sardarov’s exit from the show.

Across Chicago Fire’s 15 seasons and counting, there have been a lot of characters who have passed through the doors of Firehouse 51. Some of these individuals left almost as quickly as they arrived, while others were a key part of the firehouse’s DNA for several seasons before their time at 51 came to an end.

While there have been many core characters who have come and gone, there is one particular character whose legacy still looms large: Brian “Otis” Zvonecek.

Otis was the heart of Firehouse 51, a beloved firefighter with close connections to every member of the firehouse as well as the millions of fans tuning in every week. Otis was so central to the show that fans never expected he would find himself in the line of fire, which was what made his death in the season 8 finale the most shocking and heartbreaking death in the series’ history.

Otis died in the Chicago Fire season 8 premiere

Season 7 of Chicago Fire ended with a shocking cliffhanger with several members of 51 trapped within a mattress factory. As they made their way into the fire, Herrmann foreshadowed that things could go sideways as he remarked that a mattress factory was one of the three worst possible fires.

Upon entering the fire, Herrmann found that the factory had an old industrial boiler that was about to blow and could take out the whole block. He quickly called for an evacuation, but many members of 51 were still inside the building as the finale came to a close.

As season 8 arrived, we picked up right where the finale left off with the boiler about to explode. Everyone raced to take cover, but sadly Otis did not manage to make it to safety before the boiler exploded.

When the boiler exploded, Otis was caught in the explosion, and his injuries proved fatal. While his colleagues were able to get him out of the fire and to Chicago Med, Otis succumbed to his injuries at the hospital but not before a final farewell to Cruz.

At Med, Cruz sat with his longtime friend and was there when Otis took his final breath. Before passing, Otis said a few final words in Russian, which translated to “Brother, I will be with you always.”

Following his death, Otis’ legacy has been enshrined in a few ways in the show. In the season premiere, Chief Boden debuted a special tribute to Otis outside the firehouse in the form of a memorial for their fallen hero. A few seasons later, Cruz paid tribute to his fallen friend by naming his son Otis as a tribute to his late friend.

Why did Yuri Sardarov leave Chicago Fire?

While there have been many cast exits through the years that were a result of creative liberties from the writers or from budget cuts, Yuri Sardarov was not among those whose exits were unplanned. Like many who have left the show through the years, Sardarov felt that it was time to move on after season 7 came to an end, and that conversation ultimately led the writers to make the decision to kill Otis off in the season 8 premiere.

“We had a discussion about the character and where he was headed, and I was very upfront with [showrunner Derek Haas] about the fact that it’s been eight years, and I started when I was 22, and now I’m 31. The communication was very open and honest, and we both walked away from it feeling really good,” Sardarov told Telltale TV following his exit from the show in 2019. “It was difficult, but it was also necessary. It was a combination of me wanting to move on and them needing something akin to what’s going to happen. And I think those two things met at the perfect time.”

Although it was his decision to exit the show and a collaboration with the writers to kill Otis off in the season 8 premiere, Sardarov struggled with filming the actual death scene on the show.

“It was incredibly difficult emotionally, not to mention physically, and the prosthetics and keeping it all a secret. It was tough — it was really tough. In that last scene, Joe Minoso does such an incredible job, and the tears in his eyes were real and the tears in my eyes were real.”

What has Yuri Sardarov done since leaving Chicago Fire?

When Yuri Sardarov left Chicago Fire after seven seasons as a series regular, he did so with the intention of wanting to pursue new opportunities. Unfortunately, though, since leaving Chicago Fire he hasn’t appeared in too many titles and has not yet joined a show in a series regular role since exiting the show.

His first role after exiting Chicago Fire came in the 2020 film Adam, a drama about a salesman who becomes a quadriplegic after an accident, which was headlined by Aaron Paul. The following year, he appeared in the romantic comedy Amy and Peter Are Getting Divorced before finally returning to TV three years after his exit from Chicago Fire.

Sardarov’s first role came via a two-episode guest arc on The Rookie, playing a CIA agent turned terrorist. It was an amazing guest arc which gave him the chance to play a very different character from the good-guy type fans had seen him play on Chicago Fire.

Following his guest arc on The Rookie, Sardarov appeared in the film Daddy, about a group of four men who attended a government retreat to prove that they have what it takes to become fathers. That same year, he appeared in a guest spot on Wolf Entertainment’s FBI: International and most recently appeared in the short film The Invite.
