10 Burning Questions for ‘Chicago P.D.,’ ‘Fire’ & ‘Med’ Next Season

It wouldn’t be a One Chicago hiatus without a series of burning questions across all three shows. Chicago MedChicago Fire, and Chicago P.D. all left off with some loose threads — and in one case nearly all the characters’ lives hanging in the balance — to go into the 2026-2027 season.

Med left Sharon’s (S. Epatha Merkerson) future at Gaffney up in the air, and while we know that she’s not going anywhere (showrunner Allen MacDonald confirmed as much to TV Insider), we are very intrigued by how she’s going to fight for her job. Plus, there’s a potential new couple on the horizon after Hannah (Jessy Schram) had her and Dean’s (Steven Weber) baby, and after a couple of OG cast members (Nick Gehlfuss and Torrey DeVitto) returned last season, we can’t help but wonder who’s next.

Fire ended with almost all of 51, save for paramedics Violet (Hanako Greensmith) and Novak (Jocelyn Hudon), standing outside with former battalion chief Pascal (Dermot Mulroney), trapped inside a structure fire that had gotten out of control. It didn’t feel like the type of call everyone will walk away from. Plus, Severide (Taylor Kinney) entered that fire having made a decision about whether his future will keep him at the CFD or take him to OFI.

And P.D. saw heartbreak for Imani (Arienne Mandi) in the finale, as she finally found her sister, Shari (Selin Çuhadaroglu), only to realize just how much she’d changed as she tried to get her away from her kidnapper.

Below, we take a look at 10 burning questions for One Chicago in the fall. Share yours in the comments section.

Oliver Platt as Dr. Daniel Charles, S. Epatha Merkerson as Sharon Goodwin — 'Chicago Med' Season 11 Finale
George Burns Jr/NBC

Chicago Med: How will Sharon fight for — and keep — her job?

As Charles (Oliver Platt) fought for his job against Theo (Manish Dayal), who eventually removed himself from consideration, Sharon was caught up in the fallout. Miranda (Orlagh Cassidy) accused her of leaking Theo’s medical files to her, and Sharon was left arguing that she couldn’t fire her without the board’s approval — and she was very determined to fight for her job.

That moment arose out of showrunner Allen MacDonald needing a cliffhanger. “It was something we had discussed earlier in the season when Sharon saves Miranda’s life on the airplane, that Miranda was going to fire her that day and then later she admits that. It just kind of hit me suddenly that the whole season has been worrying about if Dr. Charles was going to leave,” he explained to TV Insider. “That was the thinking behind that: last-minute writing desperation.”

He did say that “you shouldn’t be worried” about Merkerson leaving but promised “the battle of her life.” He added, “We liked the dynamic between Miranda and Goodwin, and we didn’t want that to end yet.”

We can’t wait to see just what Sharon does to make sure that she stays exactly where she belongs.

Steven Weber as Dr. Dean Archer, Jessy Schram as Dr. Hannah Asher — 'Chicago Med' Season 11 Finale
George Burns Jr/NBC

Chicago Med: Will Dean and Hannah get together?

Hannah gave birth in the finale and after, while spending time with their baby, Dean told her he loved her. She didn’t respond in kind but did kiss him. Their road to that hasn’t been easy, and we don’t imagine that changing, especially with the complications added now that they’ll be raising a baby; they had previously been planning to just co-parent before adding a romantic relationship to the mix.

“They definitely love each other,” Schram told us. “I think Hannah needs a moment to sort what that means, but the feelings are genuine and real when she does kiss him. … I think that it’s by no means the declaration of, everything is great, and it’s by no means the declaration of, ‘OK, I’m going to kiss you and then ghost you tomorrow.’”

Added MacDonald, “We’re not really sure what that’s going to look like moving forward. Is it going to be a relationship? Are they going to get married and live together? I don’t know, but they’re going to definitely figure it out.”

Chicago Med: Which OG cast member will return next?

MacDonald has always been clear that he likes bringing back past cast members. In Season 11, that was Gehlfuss and DeVitto as Will and Natalie. Who could be next in Season 12? Colin Donnell as Connor? Yaya DaCosta as April? Brian Tee as Ethan? Marlyne Barrett as Maggie?

“I have an intention to bring back as much of the original cast as I can. Hopefully, we have plenty of years to be able to do that. But yeah, I’m planning to bring back probably a couple at least next season,” he told us.

Christian Stolte as Mouch, David Eigenberg as Herrmann, and Joe Minoso as Cruz — 'Chicago Fire' Season 14

Chicago Fire: Will someone from 51 die?

At the end of Season 14, Truck, Squad, and Engine were all inside or immediately outside (and being engulfed by a fireball) a structure fire. As Miranda Rae Mayo (whose Kidd was among those on the ladder) told us, “Everyone is in danger. Nobody’s safe really.”

We’re especially worried about Herrmann (David Eigenberg), Mouch (Christian Stolte), and Cruz (Joe Minoso), due to talk about retirement and planning for the future. We hope we’re wrong and everyone survives, but it unfortunately feels impossible they will.

Taylor Kinney as Severide — 'Chicago Fire' Season 14 Episode 19
Peter Gordon/NBC

Chicago Fire: Will Severide choose CPD or OFI?

Severide claimed he’d made the decision about his future — will he stay with the CFD or move over to OFI permanently instead of just helping out on arson investigations every so often — before 51 headed out to that call. But we wouldn’t be surprised if the events of this call, especially if someone from 51 dies, changes that. It’s hard to imagine Severide not being at 51 at this point, so we’re leaning towards him choosing the CFD.

Dermot Mulroney as Chief Dom Pascal — 'Chicago Fire' Season 13 Episode 16
Peter Gordon / NBC

Chicago Fire: Will Dermot Mulroney return?

Pascal’s future has been left up in the air, and therefore so has Mulroney’s on the show. He was fired as a result of his actions during the three-show crossover, but he returned in the finale. However, he said himself he didn’t know what the department had in store for him; he was just called in to try to convince Severide to stay at the CFD. It was hard getting used to someone taking over for Boden (Eamonn Walker) at first, but Pascal did become part of the 51 family, so we can’t help but hope that he finds his way back there.

Jason Beghe as Sergeant Hank Voight, Arienne Mandi as Eva Imani — 'Chicago P.D.' Season 13 Finale
Elizabeth Sisson/NBC

Chicago P.D.: Will Imani’s sister be charged with murder?

After finding her sister after so many years, Imani was shocked to see just how much she’d been changed by the man who’d taken her — to the point that Shari tried to kill her after luring her into a trap. She also then tried to kill herself. Voight (Jason Beghe) became privy to details that revealed that it was Shari, not her captor, responsible for a murder. Will Shari be charged, or will Voight cover it up for Imani?

Showrunner Gwen Sigan confirmed that will be answered in the premiere. “Whatever they decide to do, I think there are so many consequences that will happen emotionally, but also through the job and for the team, and what does it look like for Imani’s state of mind next season either way. Either way, she’s either got her sister in prison, most likely or her sister is out, but also dealing with all of these things and tried to kill her, and definitely is not somebody that you can just leave on their own and hope for the best,” she told TV Insider.

Marina Squerciati as Officer Kim Burgess, Jason Beghe as Hank Voight, LaRoyce Hawkins as Officer Kevin Atwater, Patrick John Flueger as Officer Adam Ruzek, Arienne Mandi as Eva Imani — 'Chicago P.D.' Season 13 Episode 3

Chicago P.D.: How will the rest of Intelligence react to the decision about Shari?

“We always love the idea of secrets — and lies — that bond people together. What does that do for a family unit like Intelligence?” Sigan noted.

Could we see the unit divided when it comes to the fallout of whatever Voight and Imani decide? Will the others be part of that process or just informed in the aftermath?

Chicago P.D.: Will there be an update on Halstead and Upton’s relationship?

The exes crossed paths again in the three-show crossover and ended it going out for drinks. But does that mean that Halstead (Jesse Lee Soffer) and Upton (Tracy Spiridakos) got back together? We’d love an update on their relationship — it would be easy, just a couple lines of dialogue — in Season 14.

“I love that it was just we know that they’re going to have a conversation, and I love that people have had their own … Everyone’s like, ‘Yeah, it wasn’t just a conversation, like they totally made up,” Spiridakos told our sister site Swooon. “But I don’t think so. I don’t think that Hailey was just like, ‘Don’t worry about it. I know you completely abandoned me for two years. It’s all good.’ I think that they, in my opinion, went and they talked, and I think it opened the door to further conversations.”

Sigan also told us after the crossover, “I think there’s definitely hope there. I think they’re different than they were years ago. I think they’re in a better spot, each of them in their own lives. And I think they have new perspective on everything that happened between them all those years ago.”

Elizabeth Sisson/NBC

One Chicago: Will there be another three-show crossover?

The latest one was certainly a success, bringing back Soffer and Spiridakos and uniting the three shows in that seamless way that no franchise seems able to do like One Chicago. It feels inevitable — but of course up to scheduling — that there will be another one in the 2026-2027 season.
