The star of The Mandalorian season 3 has finally revealed the real reason as to why the theories of Axe Woves’ being a traitor were incorrect. Prior to the air date of The Mandalorian season 3, episode 8, both Axe Woves and the Armorer came under fire from Star Wars fans as potential spies for Moff Gideon. However, both theories were proved wrong in the season finale, with the Mandalorian warriors playing integral parts in Gideon’s defeat and setting up The Mandalorian season 4.
Talking on The Big Thing podcast, the star of The Mandalorian season 3, Katee Sackhoff, has divulged why these theories surrounding Axe held no merit based on the season 2 finale of the show:
“Axe, y’know, we know he was supposed to die last year… that was the thing that no one could talk about. Like, there was this moment where he like sacrifices himself in that episode [The Mandalorian’s season 2 finale]… and he did it, we shot it, and they were like it needs to be Din.”
This means that the theories of Axe betraying the Mandalorians were always impossible, as his The Mandalorian season 3 story was re-constructed after changing season 2. This information from Sackhoff also massively affects The Mandalorian season 2, and other theories surrounding Axe from when the show’s sophomore season aired.
Axe Woves Originally Died In The Mandalorian Season 2
Sackhoff’s comments showed that Axe was initially supposed to be killed off in The Mandalorian season 2. This plan meant that the crew of The Mandalorian season 2, episode 8 shot Axe’s death scene, as revealed by Sackhoff. This links to questions after The Mandalorian season 2, with many fans wondering why Axe was not in the finale. Shortly after the release of The Mandalorian season 2, episode 8 Sackhoff stated that there is a reason why he was not there, she just could not talk about why, now revealed to be Axe’s death.
However, the creators of The Mandalorian felt the scene should have been Din’s, subsequently cutting Axe from The Mandalorian season 2’s finale altogether. The scene in question likely comes when Gideon attempts to shoot Grogu, and Din jumps in front of him. Based on Sackhoff’s comments, it is likely that this was originally supposed to be Axe, who is killed in his attempts to save the youngling. The showrunners then decided this should be Din, leaving Axe’s story open for what was seen in The Mandalorian season 3.
