Caitriona Balfe details creative disagreements with her Outlander boss Maril Davis

Caitriona Balfe and Outlander executive producer Maril Davis have revealed their behind-the-scenes creative tensions.

Caitriona Balfe, the leading actor from Outlander, doesn’t always find common ground with the show’s creators.

Disagreements often arise concerning the evolution of her role as Claire Fraser.

At the ATX TV Festival, Caitriona and Maril Davis, the executive producer, delved into their creative approaches to the series.

While the overall atmosphere on set is harmonious, Caitriona conceded that she and Maril don’t always agree on the series’ trajectory.

Fortunately, these differing viewpoints tend to be more beneficial than detrimental, ultimately leading to fruitful results.

At the festival, which coincided with World Outlander Day, Caitriona and Maril engaged with fans to talk about the initial episodes of season 7.

They participated in a panel discussion where they covered a variety of topics like directing and the dynamics between characters. Additionally, they talked about embracing new roles and what the audience can look forward to as the series approaches its final season.

However, what genuinely piqued the interest of the audience was their conversation about on-set differences of opinion.

In the interview posted on YouTube, Caitriona emphasized that she and her colleagues are fundamentally aligned in wanting the best for the show.

The Outlander star also noted that their friendship allows for healthy debates and differences of opinion. According to her, this foundation of mutual respect and affection underpins their disagreements, making the discord constructive rather than destructive.

“At the end of the day we know that we’ve got the show’s best interest at heart and we also are friends so you can have those disagreements or you can, like you know, fight your corner. But underneath there’s a lot of underlying love,” Caitriona shared.

Caitriona also talked about their typical approach to resolving conflicts during the production of Outlander.

She shared that she and Maril vigorously defend their perspectives when disagreements arise. Each presents their case, explaining their respective rationales.

More often than not, they reach a compromise and try out both ideas, which Caitriona sees as a fair resolution.

“I think a lot of the time like if it happens on set where we have a disagreement it sort of is like we fight our corner and I’d be like ‘no but I think this,’ and Maril will be like ‘but it’s because of this and because of this,’ and then usually we get to a point where we’ll do one of each which is always a good compromise,” she stated.
