Cobra Kai Universe Update Has Us Even More Excited For Season 6’s Big Tournament
A new update on Cobra Kai season 6 indicates that there’s even more to look forward to from the Sekai Taikai tournament than previously thought.
After a new update on the story for Cobra Kai season 6, there’s even more to look forward to when it comes to the Sekai Taikai. Though there are no official details on the plot of Cobra Kai’s final season, there’s little doubt that the Sekai Taikai – first mentioned in season 5 – will be integral to the upcoming episodes. After all, the entire concept of the Sekai Taikai in Cobra Kai positions it to be the ultimate challenge for Johnny, Daniel, Chozen, and all their students.
As Cobra Kai season 5 already explained, the Sekai Taikai is a prestigious karate tournament open to dojos from all over the world. Johnny and Daniel’s students earned a chance to compete in the Sekai Taikai, setting up a storyline where the characters get ready for an international event that makes the All Valley Karate Tournament look inconsequential in comparison. How Cobra Kai season 6 intends to handle such a high-stakes competition has been open to speculation for a while now, but a tease from one of its showrunners offers a hint as to what season 6 has in store for viewers.
Cobra Kai Season 6 Promises To Visit More Locations In The Karate Kid’s World (Because Of The Sekai Taikai)
According to Cobra Kai co-creator Jon Hurwitz, season 6 “expands the Karate Kid/Cobra Kai universe more than the first 5 seasons combined.” Hurwitz also praised “the diversity” of its scenes and mentioned that the series will visit “many new places in the Miyagiverse.” While Hurwitz refrained from going into specifics on where these “new places” fit into the narrative, chances are, these comments relate in some way or another to the Sekai Taikai. As an international martial arts tournament, it makes sense that it would force Cobra Kai’s cast of characters to leave the country.
Season 6 expands the Karate Kid/Cobra Kai universe more than the first 5 seasons combined. The world building has been truly exhilarating. Excited for everyone to see the diversity of scenes we've been filming episode to episode. We're going to so many new places in the… https://t.co/jreCfuNgqJ

If Hurwitz’s comments are any indication, Cobra Kai will do much more than just leave the Valley; it’ll spend time in multiple locations, most likely in an effort to build up to the Sekai Taikai. The decision to showcase other corners of The Karate Kid’s world is a promising sign for season 6, especially since it indicates that Cobra Kai is prepared to flesh out some of the other teams Johnny and Daniel’s students will be contending with during the tournament. While doing so risks taking away screen-time away from its core characters, turning their future opponents into fully realized characters will help build excitement for season 6’s biggest fights.
Cobra Kai Season 5’s Ending Reveals Why The Show Needs To Expand
The dramatic shift in the status quo in Cobra Kai season 5’s ending is exactly why an expansion of the Miyagiverse is needed, even at such a late stage in the show’s lifetime. While Kreese and Kim may find a way to involve themselves in the coming conflict, nearly all of the teenage characters on the show are expected to be on Johnny and Daniel’s side now that Cobra Kai has been defeated, meaning that if the Sekai Taikai were to happen now, most of its fights would pit Miguel, Sam, Tory, and the others against nameless characters.
Cobra Kai season 1’s showdown between Miguel and Xander proved that it can deliver exciting action sequences with brand-new characters, but its biggest battles have always been between established players in the story. Devoting some time to the other dojos as they prepare for the Sekai Taikai should help the show overcome this obstacle and create interesting foes to challenge them when the Sekai Taikai starts. Season 1 and season 4’s tournaments wouldn’t have been as compelling if the series had only shown one side’s efforts to prepare, and season 6 would benefit from following the same course.
