Doctor Who Trailer Reveals the Titles of David Tennant’s Trilogy of Special Anniversary Episodes

New Doctor Who trailer offers potential easter eggs for return of 10th Doctor as the 14th in 60th anniversary three-parter with Neil Patrick Harris.

Known as the tenth Doctor in the BBC Doctor Who series, Scottish actor David Tennant is often found ranked by fans in the top five of all Doctors within the multi-actor franchise. Luckily for fans, Tennant will be returning from his successful career since then (Broadchurch, Jessica Jones, Good Omens) as the latest avatar incarnation of the Doctor in the BBC’s 60th anniversary revisit of the series.

The three-part special will feature Tennant again as the Time Lord himself alongside returning longtime Earthling sidekick Donna Noble (played by Catherine Tate), making Tennant officially the 14th as well as the 10th Doctor to grace the series since its 1963 BBC incarnation. The latest trailer to drop has just announced the three new episodes to air in November as “The Star Beast,” “Wild Blue Yonder” and “The Giggle.”

Envisioned to celebrate the 60th anniversary of Doctor Who, the mini-season promises to unearth plotlines where previous incarnations of the Doctor left off. Showrunner Russell T Davies announced that the episode titles “are just the beginning of the Doctor’s biggest adventure yet. Autumn is coming, with three hours of danger, Donna and disaster about to be unleashed!” The episodes also announce the reprisal of the role in 2024 by Ncuti Gatwa as the 15th Doctor, who will be featured in a new season run on BBC alongside actress Millie Gibson already in production. “We’re giving you a year to speculate,” explained Davies “and then all hell lets loose.”

Speculating On Returning Doctor Who Plotlines

Joining the Tennant three-parter this November will be Yasmin Finney of Netflix’s Heartstopper (2022) and Neil Patrick Harris of How I Met Your Mother fame. Harris himself recently joined the sci-fi villain pantheon as the character The Analyst in 2021’s Wachovski film Matrix Resurrections. Harris and Doctor Who fans got their first glimpse of the actor as the mysterious (and possibly reincarnated) new villain in the BBC teaser that dropped over Christmas weekend in 2022, as well as intentionally leaked photos of the character in production.

Harris briefly discussed the casting on The View after news broke of the actor being signed to the unidentified Doctor Who role, with Harris dodging questions of whether he was playing “the greatest enemy that Dr. Who has ever faced” from host Whoopi Goldberg.

Doctor Who fans took to Twitter speculating on the secrecy of NPH’s role in the three-part special, with educated guesses including Frobisher–a character once trapped in Earth’s primordial soup in the form of a penguin, and the Dream Lord himself, a physical incarnation of the Doctor’s shadow side–and likely the “greatest enemy” that Harris’s interviewer had alluded to. Knowing how much Whovians and sci-fi fans in general love Easter eggs, viewers will likely have more commentary following the recent trailer.
