Does Dr. Charles die? Chicago Med fans react to the shocking end of episode 16

Chicago Med season 11, episode 16 has fans fearing the worst about Dr. Charles’ future and venting frustrations about the show’s latest twist.

Heading into “The Book of Charles,” an episode of Chicago Medfans were excited to see an episode dedicated to one of the show’s few remaining original characters. However, that excitement quickly evolved into panic over what the future will hold for the beloved Dr. Charles.

Warning: Spoilers ahead from Chicago Med season 11, episode 16.

“The Book of Charles” followed Dr. Charles over the course of what we can only describe as a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day where nothing seemed to go his way.

The episode opened with Charles working at the Greater Chicago Lifeline Suicide Prevention Center when a call came through from a young man named Gio threatening self-harm following the death of his girlfriend in a car accident. Charles was unable to get through to Gio, who ended the call abruptly, leaving Charles to fear the worst.

This exchange stuck with Charles, who replayed the conversation over and over in his head as the day went by, and what a day it was. It seemed that every patient Charles encountered throughout the day found a way to challenge him, but none more so than a woman named Sage.

Sage came into the ED for unexplained stomach pain, which Charles would come to diagnose as being Munchausen syndrome, a condition in which a person acts as if they have a physical or mental illness when they are not actually sick – a diagnosis he came to after Sage’s sister informed him of Sage’s troubled past. After giving Sage the diagnosis, she laid into him severely and then filed a formal complaint against Charles.

When Goodwin informed him of the complaint, he began to spiral out of control and lashed out at her for not believing him. After leaving Goodwin’s office, Charles returned to the ED, where he learned that Sage had swallowed drain cleaner seemingly as a result of their exchange. The moment rattled Charles, and it looked like he was having another panic attack, only for us to discover he was instead suffering a stroke. The episode ended with Charles having collapsed on the floor of his office and crying out for help.

Needless to say, the ending left Chicago Med fans speechless and fearing the worst, with the overwhelming concern on the minds of fans being whether Charles was going to survive. Viewers were quick to take to social media to share their concerns over Charles’ fate and the thought of losing such a beloved character has fans in a state of shock.

The One Chicago Instagram account was flooded with similar comments as fans quickly jumped in to express their hopes for Charles to pull through the ordeal and vent about the emotional toll the episode had taken on them.

“This was an intense episode of Med on so many levels, I was not mentally prepared, especially at the ending! I could not help but get very emotional, I hope and pray Dr. Charles is going to be ok! I just love him so so much.” – christine_draper1985

“Poor Dr. Charles. I’m sure Oliver Platt needs a break, but if he leaves, he will be missed.” – brightrufe078

“I am so upset! I was just talking about him yesterday, saying we all need a real Dr. Charles in our lives. I’m going to start crying again, and the look on his face when that horrible woman said those lies to him!!! They’d better fix this!” -michele_l_m

We’ll find out what’s to come next for Charles when Chicago Med season 11, episode 17, airs on April 8. Hopefully, Charles will be found in time to get him the treatment he needs, and he’ll pull through this near-death experience. We can’t imagine the show without the character and will be truly gutted if Chicago Med ends up killing Charles off.

Hopefully, Charles will survive, but if he by chance does not, it’s clear that the fans will not be happy and will need some time to process a loss of that magnitude.
