Executive Producer Teases “Turns & Twists” Ahead for Chicago Med & Fire’s Love Square

Dr. Frost’s romance with Novak may have fizzled, but the breakup make make way for a love triangle with Violet and Vasquez.

Chihards have always relished in the steamy romances and heated drama of Chicago Fire, and a fascinating love triangle, dare we say, love square has emerged across the One Chicago franchise.

Season 14 of Chicago Fire got quite a shake-up with the arrival of Firehouse 51 newcomer Sal Vasquez (Brandon Larracuente), a charming yet tight-lipped young firefighter who soon caught several eyes around the station. After the flirty and bubbly Lizzy Novak (Jocelyn Hudon) wasted no time making her affections clear, her dear friend and fellow paramedic Violet (Hanako Greensmith) stuffed her developing feelings for the Firehouse 51 newbie.

However, after Vasquez and Violet began connecting and their chemistry became undeniable, she started feeling a little guilty considering Novak’s workplace crush. Just as that love triangle emerged, in comes Chicago Med heartthrob Dr. John Frost (Darren Barnet), who instantly charmed Novak when the paramedics stopped by Gaffney. But could Novak and Frost’s chemistry snuff her flame with Vasquez?

With Novak’s flirtatious nature with Vasquez, added to her hooking up with Frost, plus Violet’s growing romance with Vasquez, we have a certified One Chicago love conflict upon us, and Chicago Fire producer Reza Tabrizi has weighed in on the drama.

Violet and Novak both had the hots for Vasquez until Frost came along

A split of Lyla Novak (Jocelyn Hudon), Violet Mikami (Hanako Greensmith), Sal Vasquez (Brandon Larracuente), and Dr. John Frost (Darren Barnet).

As Novak started a fling with Frost, she soon seemed to forget about Vasquez, which was convenient as he seemed to be developing stronger feelings for Violet. After Novak finally dished the details about her romantic rendezvous with the Gaffney doctor, Violet started feeling better about her developing feelings for Vasquez. Novak and Frost seemed absolutely smitten, so Violet surely had the go-ahead, right?

“We really like it when we can have characters have storylines across the shows, and not just within one show. And as far as Frost coming into the picture for Novak, considering, obviously, the feelings she had for Vasquez, that dynamic is gonna be interesting to explore,” Chicago Fire’s Tabrizi told NBC Insider while speaking to the budding One Chicago relationship. “And the way that Vasquez and Violet naturally ended up getting close without really it being a plan. In the fall finale [“Pierce the Vein”], we saw that within one episode, they were very comfortable with each other all of a sudden.”

Tabrizi explains that while Violet and Vasquez didn’t “start” close, they wanted to “spend more time together” the more they learned about each other. Just as the sparks began truly flying between Violet and Vasquez — the first responders shared their first kiss and even enjoyed a steamy night together — Violet discovered that Novak and Frost weren’t as serious as she previously thought. After Vasquez was reassigned to a different firehouse for a shift, Novak made a joke about her workplace crush being absent, instantly sending a jolt of panic down Violet’s spine.

So Novak wasn’t entirely over Vasquez, apparently. Novak and Frost hit turbulence due to her fear of commitment and feeling that Frost was moving too fast, so it’s no surprise that she bounced back to her crush on Vasquez out of habit. But could Frost and Novak reconcile their difference and get back together? Violet and Vasquez have undoubtedly passed a point of no return after their hook-up, so now Violet is feeling conflicted on how she’ll tell her best friend about the development.

“The triangle and the four-point… it’s gonna be interesting to explore. And, as we always do, there’s definitely gonna be turns and twists,” Tabrizi said.

How will the shocking confession impact the paramedics’ relationship moving forward? Find out by watching Season 14 of Chicago Fire Wednesdays at 9/8c on NBC and the next day on Peacock.
