Future The Boys Spinoffs Chances Addressed By Amazon Exec Ahead of Gen V’s Release

Amazon executive Vernon Sanders addresses the chances of future spinoffs for The Boys ahead of the release of the first live-action one, Gen V.

Amazon executive Vernon Sanders addresses whether more spinoffs of The Boys will follow Gen V. Gen V premieres on September 29, marking The Boys’ first live-action spinoff show. It will feature cameos from several of the mainline show’s stars and follows the grisly happenings at Vought’s college for supes. Additionally, the show will set up The Boys season 4, which has been following a team of vigilantes’ efforts to combat the corruption of superheroes who work for Vought. With The Boys Presents: Diabolical offering a unique direction to take the franchise in addition to Gen V, the opportunity for more spinoffs seems apparent.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Sanders discussed what The Boys’ future looks like. While Sanders is the head of television at Amazon and MGM Studios, he revealed that what happens with the property isn’t in the hands of the studio, as instead, they have put all their trust in showrunner, Eric Kripke, to decide what happens with the franchise, including future spinoffs. Sanders hinted that Kripke does have a plan in mind but that it might not surface until after the release of The Boys season 4 and Gen V. Check out his statement below:

I will say this: Eric [Kripke] has had a vision for what this all leads to for years now, and we’ve been in an ongoing conversation about what comes next. So, it’s probably premature to talk about that beyond saying we believe in Eric, and if Eric is interested in continuing the story, we’ll be the first ones in line to really work with him on what that is. But right now we’re super focused on Gen V and an amazing season 4 of The Boys, which I think is going to blow fans away. I think Seth and Evan and Eric are genuinely interested in it. I think we’ve been probably the ones who’ve been wanting to be careful not to over expose. So, once we committed to Gen V, we really wanted that to be the next thing out. And once we have it out and get a chance to see how everyone’s reacting to it, we can start talking about, like I said, what comes next.

Will The Boys’ Universe Continue Expanding?

Understandably, Kripke and Amazon are focusing on the new seasons of The Boys and Gen V before releasing any details about the franchise’s future. Especially with the ongoing SAG-AFTRA and Writers Guild of America strikes, it will take additional effort to get the word out without the aid of the show’s actors. However, Sanders’ statement still sounds promising and teases that Kripke might have something bigger in mind for the franchise than just Gen V. After all, the arrival of the first live-action spinoff could set the stage for The Boys’ shared universe.

While Gen V is separate from The Boys, it exists in the same universe, and there will be a bit of crossover with The Boys’ character cameos. As a result, this could be the start of a TV universe similar to the Arrowverse, which started with Arrow before growing into a collection of six interconnected television shows. Gen V also isn’t The Boys’ only spinoff, as the franchise boasts the animated The Boys Presents: Diabolical, which featured three episodes Kripke considers canon. Meanwhile, there are many opportunities for spinoffs in the future, including solo shows for the most popular characters, like Billy Butcher (Karl Urban), Kimiko (Karen Fukuhara), or A-Train (Jessie T. Usher).

Right now, though, there’s no need to rush on the shared universe. The Boys still has two more seasons in the works, and Gen V could get further seasons, meaning the franchise will have new content to put out for a while. However, it will be hard to tie up The Boys neatly, as there are so many layers of corruption in Vought and many subplots regarding each character to complete. Hopefully, The Boys’ expansive premise and Gen V’s introduction hint at a bigger future for the franchise.
