House of the Dragon season 2 coming in June, suggests Warner Bros. Discovery boss
We already know House of the Dragon season 2 is coming out this summer. Now David Zaslav says it’s coming out “next quarter.” Which means…
We’ve known for a while that the second season of HBO’s Game of Thrones prequel show House of the Dragon is coming out sometime this summer. The higher-ups at Warner Bros. Discovery have been saying that for months. But the summer lasts from June 20 through September 22. When exactly in that range will we get to see the continuing adventures of Rhaenyra Targaryen, Alicent Hightower, and the rest of the highly dysfunctional, violent characters battling each other for the Iron Throne?
During a recent earnings call, Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav gave us another clue when he talked about HBO’s upcoming schedule for the year. “Looking ahead, we’ve got one of the best lineups in the history of HBO,” he said, according to The Hollywood Reporter. “This next quarter, we’ll have Hacks and House of the Dragon, followed by DC’s The Penguin and the new Dune series. Then in 2025, we’ll kick off the year with the new season ofThe White Lotus, followed by The Last of Us and Euphoria, just to name a few.”
So House of the Dragon season 2 is coming out “next quarter.” In the context of TV schedules, quarters work how you think they would. The first quarter lasts from January through March, the second from April through June, the third from July through September, and the fourth from October through December. We’re in the first quarter right now, so the “next quarter” will kick off at the start of April and finsih at the end of June. Given that House of the Dragon season 2 is going to come out this summer, that just leaves several days of overlap: the new season will drop sometime between Thursday, June 20 and Sunday, June 30.
Of course, it’s possible Zaslav wasn’t giving it quite this much thought when he was speaking on the earnings call. He might have just meant, “it’s coming soon,” which it is. But what I outlined above is the literal interpretation of what he said.
Right now, House of the Dragon is undergoing reshoots that are expected to last into March. We still don’t have an official announcement about the release date. Until we get one, I don’t think we can pin anything down exactly, but this is a fun clue.
