“I don’t like hard endings”: Dave Filoni Knows Why Pedro Pascal’s The Mandalorian Can Keep Going Even after Season 4

Executive Producer Dave Filoni shared his thoughts on endings in the Star Wars universe and hinted at future plans for The Mandalorian.

The Mandalorian debuted back in 2019, becoming the first live-action series set in George Lucas’ Star Wars universe. Starring Pedro Pascal in the lead role, the series gained immense popularity throughout its three seasons. As a result, Disney announced a film continuation of the original story that focuses on Din Djarin and Grogu.

During an interview ahead of the show’s third season, executive producer Dave Filoni spoke about how the series might conclude. Filoni’s approach to crafting season finales combined with the uncertain future of the series beyond its planned feature film continuation hint that The Mandalorian could easily return for season 4 and beyond. Here is everything you need to know about the future of The Mandalorian.

Dave Filoni’s Comments Hint Pedro Pascal’s The Mandalorian Could Go Season 4 and Beyond

Created by Jon Favreau, The Mandalorian premiered in 2019 and quickly impressed critics and fans alike. The show’s third season premiered in March 2023 and concluded in April 2023. Ahead of the third installment executive producer Dave Filoni spoke about the show’s future in an interview with Empire magazine.

I think that in some ways you want each season to have a feeling of an ending. But in a lot of what I’ve done, I don’t like hard endings.

Filoni made the above statement explaining that each season of the Pedro Pascal-led series was designed to have its own ending. However, Filoni always wanted to leave the door open for future stories involving the show’s main characters and other supporting characters.

Similarly, Filoni’s Clone Wars animated series also does not have a definitive ending, and several of its plot threads were later picked up in the Star Wars Rebels series. After the conclusion of Rebels, some of its storylines were brought to live-action in the Ahsoka spinoff. Therefore, from Filoni’s words and past record, it is clear that The Mandalorian has a long road ahead in the Star Wars universe.

The Mandalorian‘s Future Remains Uncertain Despite Feature Film Plans

Despite Filoni’s comments, the future of The Mandalorian remains uncertain at least on the streaming side of things. In January 2024, it was announced that the series would continue in the form of a feature film titled The Mandalorian & Grogu. Thus, the film will be the first theatrical film in the Star Wars franchise to be released after 2019’s The Rise of Skywalker.

As a result, it is unclear whether The Mandalorian will return to its original television format after the film or conclude with the film serving as its finale. According to reports, writing for season 4 had taken place before season 3 was released. However, it is now unclear whether The Mandalorian & Grogu has replaced the fourth season.

The third season ends with Din Djarin and Grogu seemingly retiring and starting a new life on Navarro. However, the confirmation of the film continuation implies that the season 3 finale was not meant as a series finale. Plus, with Filoni’s comments about his desire for open endings, The Mandalorian may continue in some shape or form beyond the planned film which is scheduled to be released on May 22, 2026.
