Morticia’s Story Means We Need Grandmama & The Frumps In Wednesday S2
Netflix’s Wednesday has already expanded on the Addams Family in season 1, but season 2 must delve even deeper, and not necessarily into the Addams.
Two significant topics in Netflix’s Wednesday were the focus on expanding Wednesday’s character and exploring her dynamics with her family, in particular, her mother Morticia, which is a storyline that should definitely continue into Wednesday season 2 with the inclusion of Grandmamma and the Frumps. Wednesday is a mystery comedy series starring Jenna Ortega as the iconic Wednesday Addams. In the series, Wednesday is expelled from school and is forced to attend her parents’ alma mater, Nevermore Academy, wherein she meets a variety of outcasts and mysterious figures.
Wednesday’s relationship with her mother is a subtle but important storyline throughout Wednesday season 1. Throughout the show, Wednesday seems resentful of her parents’ love and actively avoids becoming like her mother, despite their undeniable similarities. Wednesday’s avoidance of her parents comes to a head when they become part of a murder investigation in Jericho, and she must defend them from scrutiny. In this way, Wednesday sees a new side of the Addams and her mother specifically. Wednesday season 2 must expand on this new understanding of Morticia and Wednesday’s relationship with her by introducing more of Morticia’s relatives.
The Frump Family Will Improve Wednesday’s Relationship With Morticia
Throughout Wednesday, it’s clear that the titular character has a better relationship with the Addams and Gomez’s side of the family than Morticia’s. In terms of her father, Wednesday still judges his overt love for her mother but doesn’t need to fear becoming too much like him, unlike Morticia. Additionally, Wednesday clearly has a soft spot for her brother Pugsley and has a close relationship with her Uncle Fester, Gomez’s brother. Perhaps, with more connection to the Frumps, Wednesday can become just as close with her mother and her side of the family.
This could work because it will allow Wednesday to see a new side of her mother that she has never seen before. At Nevermore, it always seemed that Morticia was perfect during her school years, and this reputation is a lot for Wednesday to live up to. If she could see the flaws within her mother by talking to the Frumps and identify the good ways in which they are similar, then maybe Wednesday could come to understand her mother better. By examining Morticia’s past, Wednesday can see how they are the same, but also fundamentally different.
The Frumps Can Explore Unknown Addams Family Territory
Apart from being good plot devices for Wednesday and Morticia’s relationship, the Frumps can also expand on the Addams Family world by delving into unknown territory. The first mention of the Frumps within Addams Family lore appeared in the 1964 television series. In it, Morticia had a sister named Ophelia, a mother named Hester, and Uncle Fester was actually Morticia’s uncle. However, in the later 1990s Addams Family films, the relations were changed so that Fester became Gomez’s brother and Grandmamma, who was originally an Addams, became Morticia’s mother instead.
Because the Frumps have not been included within Addams Family content since the 1960s, it would be a very interesting and cool choice to bring them back in Wednesday season 2. The creators could bring a whole new life to the characters and could create any number of storylines or conflicts with them. All in all, the Frumps offer a new aspect of the Addams Family that modern audiences have likely never seen before. Plus, they can bring a different perspective on Morticia and the dynamics of the Addams Family as a whole.
Grandmama Will Expand Wednesday’s Vision Storyline
Of all the potential Frumps that could appear in Wednesday, Grandmamma would be the most important because of Wednesday’s visions and powers. In Wednesday season 1, it was revealed that her visions were passed down the maternal line, though hers are dark and ominous while Morticia’s are optimistic. If Wednesday could come into contact with Grandmamma, Morticia’s mother, more light could be shed on these psychic visions and what they mean. Grandmamma could play an important role in giving Wednesday a better understanding of herself and her powers. This storyline could act similarly to Wednesday’s Goody Addams plot in season 1, wherein Wednesday’s present is affected by her family’s past.
Though the Addams have always been the main family within the franchise, Wednesday could offer a glimpse into an entirely different side of the family with the Frumps. The inclusion of Morticia’s family would not only expand on her character but also give Wednesday a better chance of having a good relationship with her mother. The Frumps would be an exciting addition to the beloved world of Wednesday and the Addams.
