Sam Heughan says there will be ‘a lot of sadness’ when Outlander comes to an end

The 43-year-old Scottish actor has starred as Jamie Fraser in the hugely successful show since 2103 alongside Caitriona Balfe and admitted the end of the show will come with plenty of sadness.

Outlander star Sam Heughan has admitted there will be a lot of sadness when the iconic TV show comes to an end.

The 43-year-old Scottish actor has starred as Jamie Fraser in the hugely successful show since 2013, alongside Caitriona Balfe as Claire Fraser, with the series set to end after its eighth season.

Speaking to Radio Times, Sam described his time on Outlander as a “crazy, incredible, rewarding journey”, gushing about his costars.

He said: “It’s been such a crazy, incredible, rewarding journey. Ten years, seven seasons in, and we’re going to do one more eventually.

“But I think we’re coming to realise we’re towards the end, and that it’s going to be quite a life-changing moment. The show has been my life for a long time. I’ve made friends, we’re basically a family, and it’s going to be very odd not to see everyone again.

“When we finished series seven, we all realised that was the last but one. And you could feel it… There’s going to be a lot of sadness.”

Sam also confirmed that the final series has not yet been shot, with all production on hold due to the Hollywood writer and actor strikes. He also said there was another series of his travel show with Outlander co-star Graham McTavish, Men In Kilts, coming out.

“This current series is split into two, so there’ll be another half-series next year, followed by the final series after that,” he said. “And then, of course, we’ve got Men in Kilts in between! So there’s a lot going on before we even get to the last series.”

The actor gushed about Caitriona Balfe, explaining they have “grown up together” in the decade they spent on the show.

He said: “When we started, we were both pretty green, working a bit, but not at this level. We’ve sort of grown up together, I think, experienced our first fan events, our first red carpets and press junkets, and coming to New York for the first time. We’re kind of like brother and sister, really.

“And it’s also nice to see both of us having our careers and success outside Outlander as well. It’ll be weird to say goodbye.”

Outlander’s seventh season is currently airing, but will soon head on a mid-season break.
