Succession Fans Don’t Want a Prequel For a Good Reason

A sequel, on the other hand, is a whole other conversation.

It’s no wonder that Succession is the show that took over the 2023 award season. From the brilliant writing to the impeccable acting of all the cast members, the show deserves just about every nomination it has received. Plus, with so many actors up for the same categories, it must be hard for the judges to decide who to actually award.

The only bad thing about Succession this year is that it is over. No matter how powerful the finale was and how affected viewers were after watching it, the audience was still left wanting more.

While it was a wise decision to end the show on a high note and not wait for it to feel drawn out and boring, a show with so many characters and stories leaves the door open for prequels, sequels, and other spin-offs of all kinds. Too bad viewers aren’t that interested in most of them.

Is There Going To Be a Succession Prequel?

As of today, there is no news that any spin-offs of the hit drama are in production or even under discussion. Any talk of possible shows to continue the story or expand the world is strictly fan speculation that hasn’t died down months after the grand finale premiere.

However, the majority of viewers aren’t interested in seeing a prequel centered on the Roys. While the story of the most toxic family on modern television sounds very interesting, judging by all the bits and pieces that have been given to viewers over the course of four seasons, if the show were to explore it further, the influence of the original show would be ruined.

There is a lot of conjecture and speculation about the childhoods of Connor, Kendall, Roman, and Shiv, but once the events are set in stone (or in this case, on film), the suspense of possible gaslighting would be ruined.

Do we know for sure that Roman was locked in that cage as a child? No. Do we know if he asked for it? No. And that is what makes the story so disturbing and unsettling.

Knowing the Roys, they could be telling a hurtful truth, just as they could be making up an even more hurtful lie. And we, as viewers, aren’t supposed to know, but instead are supposed to focus on their personalities and interpersonal relationships. The abuse and neglect was obvious, but for the sake of the original show, the audience wasn’t supposed to know the extent of it.

If you suddenly miss the chaos of the Roy family, you can stream all 4 seasons of Succession on Max.
